  • C-85 Or C-90

I have a C-85-8 in my plane now and I will be flying floats this coming summer. Our other T-craft has a C-90-12F...both have less than 100hrs SMOH. We were contemplating switching engines. I was just wondering if the performance increase would be worth the effort? The paperwork would simply be a 337 field approval for upgrade from an 85 to a 90 since the plane has the Harer STC, but will the performance increase be very noticable? We dont want to put the floats on the plane with the C-90 because its a real creampuff and we dont want it outside. Give me your opinions guys. Option 2 is to switch the props. The 85hp bird has a McCauley 71-42 and the C-90 has a Sensenich 74-40.

Swap props. I know the longer one isn't on the list for the 85hp T but it sure will help get you in the air better.

Didn't someone say that the 90 was much more "torquey"? Wouldn't that equate to more thrust? I'm just thinking out loud here, and wondering for myself as well... someone said something about the 0-200 STC'd crank and rods with a C-90 cam??

If I had the options you mention, believe I would try the long prop on the 85 to get a comparison with what you are using...like Jason mentioned, then when it was minus 20 deg. F and too cold to fly unless you need to...swap engines and use the long prop! Just thinkin' out loud...! It's about minus 22 deg. F...a lady just called asking my wife about a Caribbean cruise we took a couple years ago and my wife is getting that "Mexico/Hawaii look" on her face...and then you mention float flying...I better go get another armload of firewood... PS: I found a pair of L-2 wings in storage a couple of miles from here. The owner seems open to talk.
