Re: checking auto gas for alcohol

It all depends on the part of the country. Hear is a basic map of were the different fuels are.

The map shows only where specific fuels are required due to emissions, laws, time of season, etc. Hence the higher population areas are marked. Interesting, though.

According to my logs...during the recent overhaul of my C85-8 they put 100octane valves and guides in...have any of you heard of this? Stellite?? I still mix auto gas in from time to time.

MTowsley is correct... that map only shows where the specific fuels are required... I hauled fuel in WA, ID, and MT and we hauled oxygenated car gas in all of those states.
Dano T, that's basically it, it's updated guides and a different material for the valve as well.

Thanks for the information on epoxy vs ethanol. I coated my fuel gauge float with epoxy, so it is good info for me.

Re: checking auto gas for alcohol

All of these problems come along with alcohol use. Many years ago the auto industry went though many of these same problems. Changes need to be made in order not to get melt down in the tanks or from rubber seals coming apart. I have close to 300 hours on my cub, most of it with auto gas. Previous to this I put over 600 hours on a cessna 150 using auto fuel. The key is to buy the gas from one supplier and test every load. I personaly get mine from the local amoco dealer. I have never had a problem. After reading these posts I reread the stc for my cub. It specfically says NO ALCOHOL. I would hate to think what the insurance company would say if the was an accident was caused from alcohol in the fuel. Probablly no coverage.

A lot of the new vehicles being sold will burn e85 with no changes to the fuel system. I am sure this mixture is a lot more volatable to seals and tanks than 10% mix in the gas. I still think alcohol has a place in our fuel.

This is a renewable resourse that keeps our dollars here in the USA. When was the last time one of the oil shekes bought something in you town? The use of alcohol in our fuel helps the local farmer and has created many local jobs in the comunities where plants have been built. If you raise the price of corn to the farmer he will spend money here in the US.

by the way I am a farmer

Is there any testing what proves what fuels containing Ethanol are safe to fly with, what have been accepted by FAA and DOT?
Is anyone planing to do this? EAA, Peterson Aviation.

Re: checking auto gas for alcohol

My STC for autofuel (EAA) is very specific about NOT using any fuel with any kind of alcohol.

                    Go to:

for more info on a plane that flies only on ethanol. I think they have an STC for it.

One of the drawbacks is that Ethanol has fewer bangs for the buck so you don't get as much energy for your dollar.
Maybe they sell an STC so that you can run both fuels....
