  • Alaska Bushwheel Tundra Tire STC

    Hi,
I was talking on the phone with Derek Winn of Alaska Bushwheel yesterday about the possibility of them STCing their Bushwheels for Taylorcrafts. He said that he could do it fairly easily if only he could get a copy of at least three different owners' 337 field appovals of any kind of tundra tire on their Taylorcrafts. I was wondering if those of you with these approvals would be so kind as to do that. It sounds like the T-craft market is too small for him to want to spend a lot of time chasing these down and he's had guys say they would provide him with the documention but which subsequently turned out to be empty promises. As I am in Canada we do not have the equivalent of a 337 approval so everything must be STC'd if we want to stay certified. I was just thinking that with the new hydraulic brake kit that the factory is promising coupled with these bushwheels it would make for a fantastic STC'd combination for rougher, shorter fields. Anyway Alaska Bushwheel's number is 1-800-442-8473 if you want to help.
    Thanks,
    Dale

I had been flying my plane with the shinn brakes and 26" ABW tires um how would one say so as not to get ones self introuble "experimentally" for about 30 hrs. Not one single problem. brakes are strong enough to put it on her nose. Smoothest landings ever. I too have asked Whoop at ABW about the STC. I think he could sell a lot of them tires, probably more than he thinks.

Here in alaska you can get a 337 approved for the 26 inch bushwheels or the 26 inch goodyears without any problems. As long as you have hydrolic brakes. I have a 337 for the 26 in goodyears without hydrolic brakes but i got it about 8 years ago when feild approvals were easy to get. I think that they could get a stc for the bushwheels on the new talorcrafts without to much hassel. I will also give them a call.

          Hi Again,
I talked with Derek at AK Bushwheels again and it seems that he hasn't heard from anybody yet. He says that this would be an ideal time as he's sending a bunch of stuff to the FAA very soon and it would be easy to piggyback in, so to speak. Anyway there must be three field approved tundra tired t-crafts out there. If you can help, thanks.

          Jason,
I love the pictures you have on the site! You may be right in that the brakes may be a moot issue, it sounds like you have them figured. I appreciate your insightfullness. I was basing my comment on hydraulic brakes on the comments I've read on this site while researching the issue of brake effectiveness with larger tires. If the shinns work then that is even better!

          Thanks,
          Dale

Mine work great, Even with completely worn out brake shoes. Perhaps that is the secret?

You never need much brake anyway. Sounds like now is the time for anyone that has an approved 337 to step up and help get these wonderful tires approved on the Tcrafts.
