  • Spar Varnish

I am looking at sealing a spar on another plane I am working on. Is there a difference between Spar Varnish and Spar Urethane, or is it the same thing?

Also, the spar was sealed but they then covered it in silver along with the fabric . Should I remove the silver?

    Re: Spar Varnish

    Richard,
The difference in true "spar varnish" and "urethane varnish" boils down to the urethane being more flexible for a longer period of time. Alot of the marine products out there now are really great, and provide wonderful protection. I personally like PolyFiber's Epoxy varnish... I have a sample here in the shop that's well over 10 years old, and it is still very flexible. To me, flexible means that it will provide a little better protection. If it were my project, I'd be more tempted to coat the whole thing with epoxy varnish.
I wouldn't worry too much on the silver being on there, unless you're going to recoat that area, then I'd remove it (actually, I'd remove it anyway, as I think it looks bad... plus I like to be able to see the wood grain when inspecting).
Whatever you decide to use, make sure you follow the manufacturer's directions as far as what you need to do to prepare the surface.. ie; sand or scuff the existing varnish, or whatever they recommend.
