  • Radios and Skylights

For anyone interested, I have added photos to my gallery of my new radio installation and my completed skylight, as of today.

I have an older Dittel 720 com radio, which has a low current draw, installed in the sleeve mount, attached to what was the ELT antenna.

My skylight will be the subject of a 337 form.

      Bill:

I'm also interested in the skylight. Can you give us details of it's construction?

        Re: Radios and Skylights

I "designed" a skylight installation for my last T-craft in 1998, and was very pleased with it. I bought the F-21 skylight drawings from Forrest to see how the factory did it, but since I am not a welder, and didn't want to do anything that could not be un-done later, I figured out how to do it with Adel clamps and the least amount of changes. It was even done on that airplane while assembled.

On this T-craft, which is a pre-war, the spruce wood pieces (that the top rear windshield was attached to) were TAPED to the fuselage cross tube. I felt this was not good enough to carry the loads of the windshield and the frotn of a skylight... so I made up a slightly different arrangement that was stronger and safer.

The bottom line is that I will be doing a 337 to approve this new installation, but I will TRY to word it so it will also cover the first version, because the first version will be more typical for other T-craft owners to do. My sketches and drawings will be posted on my gallery photo page, and some of the photos are still there. I also have a set of notes and instructions I have been working on, which I will be glad to send to any interested parties. But since I have trouble attaching files to forum private messages, you'll have to send me your "regular" e-mail address.

All that being said, the skylight makes a huge difference!

          Re: Radios and Skylights

There's already an STC for a skylight under STC #SA661AL, owned by Greg Clayton, Box 73204, Fairbanks, AK 99707. It applies to BC12-D series, and is a really nice installation as well. If you FAA inspector is up to snuff, they're going to balk at doing a field approval on something that is already STC'd.
I do like the looks of the install on the one here, Victor Bravo.. very nice! Maybe you should look into doing a multiple STC on it?
