Runway-requirements

I created a new thread so I wouldn't muddy the water being off topic...so then for a private strip, the FAA isn't involved. How about neighbors? The regs say you should be 500 feet above persons or property. So if I take off or land, and cross my neighbors house at 300 feet, have I broken any law? Would my town try to rezone or otherwise ban me from future flights? Or does my neighbor just egg my house. ))

Howdy Rampboy,

If memory serves, I beleive that take-offs and landings are exempted from the vertical and horizontal distance requirements. However, flying over your neighbors house @ 300' will not them the happiest folks in the world.

and yet I still do it quite often!!
(they didn't have to build their house at the end of our runway.....)

The best thing to do is take a nice ariel photo of their house.Give them a 8x10 in a cheap frame. I'll bet a year later they all have it still hanging in their living room & tell everyone itwas a gift from thier friend the pilot that lives down the road. Of course use common sense,don't buzz their backyard BBQ.etc,etc.

I went through this process in 1999. Get in touch with AOPA and they will send you a packet with a great deal of useful information and advise. There is a form that you file with the FAA with information requested on obstructions, tower, churches, schools within 4 to 5 NM,etc. North Carolina requires a permit to establish a landing place (simple one page form). State depends mainly on FAA approval. Big difference for private vs. public airport.

The most significant potential problem is your local zoning laws. Check these out first.

My 1700 foot strip (29NC) is an uphill one-way in and one-way out narrow one but serves me fine. You land and take off over my house. See link below:

Seems like there is a house at the end of most of the runways here. Most of the time when your over there house they all come out just to see who it is.lol
