sandblasting vs beadblasting

Anyone,

Just picked up a basket case Taylorcraft, wow, pieces and parts. I'm wanting to clean up the frame and but want to make sure that sandblasting the frame is okay, or do I need to bead blast? Also where should I be able to find the data plate on the fuselage? This thing has been in a barn since 1983 so its pretty ratty but doesn't appear to be in terrible shape. But this one will test my skill, patience and checking account.

Dan,
Sand blasting is cheaper but the beeds do a little cleaner job and seam to cut the old paint/primer a little better without pitting the steel parts as much as the sand does.They both work fine just be careful if you use a course sand.

Thanks, Kevin. The whole thing looks pretty overwhelming with parts on my trailer and in the garage, but I'll just have to eat the "proverbial" elephant one piece at a time.

I plan on using a 2 part epoxy primer, any suggestions?

The data plate could be on the right side floor board near where the bottom of the door would be. Serial #s could be stamped on fuselage door hinges, or on fwd side of instrument panel support structure? Howard

Not really, except that diluted Zinc Chromate would hold off rust until the complete fuse. was blasted (assuming a multi week task), then you could do 2 part over the ZC. Might save on clean-up - Mike

Well, depending on the cost, I'm going to try and get the whole thing blasted and then painted with the 2 part primer. Then as I repair problem areas, I will just sand off the primer and touch-up after repair. Thanks

IronHead. The Stitts Two part primer works great. I have it on several of my project planes it work just fine. I prefer the white. But everyone prefers something don't they???

Sorry Still living in the sixties. (Not all that old though) You can Get the Polyfiber epoxy primer through Aircraft Spruce And Speciality. Best of luck
