  • Fuel Shutoff Valve

Can any of you suggest a good new replacement for a fuel shutoff valve? One of mine is leaking.

    Howdy Grant,

Which type of valve is it? If it is the old Imperial valve they can usually be repaired. If not, you may have to go to an Andair valve. Kinda high!!!

If it were me, I sure would try to fix the existing valve.

I have the same problem and it was suggested that the valve be lapped with toothpaste. This corrected the problem.

Well, I will take it apart and give that a try.

        Thanks.

          Re: Fuel Shutoff Valve

This subject has come up before, and many from the tribe have already contributed good info so you might check the archives. That said, it seems that the fuel valve has two favorite ways to leak. It leaks past the valve stem packing or it allows fuel to pass around the valve cone even when it is shut off.

The valve stem issue is easy to fix. Remove the old leather packing and cut a new packing with gasket punches. (Of course, virually no one has gasket punches anymore, so the alternate procedure is...) Take a three foot (more or less) length of lacing cord, moisten it with fuel lube, then wrap it smoothly around the valve stem. Screwing the valve cap back on squishes the lacing cord into an excellent packing. You might have to cut a try a couple times.

A leaking valve cone can be lapped with toothpaste - up to a point. Lapping works well for light scratches. If, however, a deep score exists in the valve cone and you lap it out, you may take off too much material and then the cone will sit so deeply in the valve body that the valve stop will no longer engage. (Hmmm, how do I know this??). If you have a deep score then it might work better to fill the score with solder before lapping. I have not tried this last technique, but I believe it would work well.

If you don't want to buy a whole set of cutters, you might check out a store that sells reloading or blackpowder supplies. Ask to look at their wad cutters.
