  • Prop Re-Pitch

Anyone have a prop re-pitched lately? If so....How Much $$$. I was thinking of getting mine re-pitched from 44" to 40". I think this must be cheaper than buying another prop. Unless someone has a good 74-40 prop they'd like to swap for a McCauley 1A90 71-44.

Round here it costs about $165 to re-pitch a prop. I get 2300 static and 2600 max out of my A65 with Mac 1B90 74-42.

      Re: Prop Re-Pitch

Wow that's pretty cheap. I guess re-pitching the prop would be the way to go. I do get reasonable performance with the prop I have on floats and it's fairly impressive on wheels or skis...I just think that come July when it is hot and humid I'll be sluggish with 2 on board when on floats next summer. Hey Jason....how did the new bush wheels affect your performance? They look great in the pictures......I think people underestimate the old T-Craft's bush capabilities...The ultimate poor man's bush plane.

How is a re-pitching done? Do they hold the hub and wrench the tip? Does re-pitching induce any internal stress in the prop? If so, do they anneal it or anything to relieve the stress as part of the process? Is there a limit to how many times a prop can be re-pitched?

          Re: Prop Re-Pitch

The bush wheels let me come in just a bit slower with a higher angle of attack without touching the tail-wheel first. Slowed the plane down a bit, but I don't care much about that. I love them tires!!! Funny thing is they didn't weigh much more than the 8.50's I took off. I can still get about 750+ fpm climb rate with them on, think it was a bit better with the smaller tires. A fixed pitch metal aluminum prop can be re-pitched up to +/- 10" as many times as you want(so says the guys at the prop shop) and you guessed it. Bolt the hub down and put a big clamp on the blade, Twist it, measure it, track the blades and send it out the door.

Repitching a prop is alot cheaper than another prop but the extra 3 inches dose make a big dif. Jason which bushwheels you get.

Jason, looked at your pictures. Very interesting. I am afraid the Yellow Duck would not feel welcome there. That is real bush flying.

Awe heck guys, we have plenty of farm flying grass strips up here also. The NW in my mind is the most scenic place to fly. Mountains, Water, Islands, Ocean, and Eastern Wa has a lot of rolling wheat and corn fields, even a bit of the desert. Plenty of variety.
