    Here is a post that I put on my family website about a trip to the Reklaw, Texas fly-in this past weekend. Zack is my 11 year old son.

    Zack and I went to Reklaw, Texas this past weekend. Every year, in the 4th weeekend of October, Dave Mason has a get-together at his grass strip (Flying M Ranch) in Reklaw Texas (about 100 miles SE of Dallas, between Tyler and Lufkin).

    On the first day, we flew two hours to Alexandria International (no joke, that really is the name of the airport) where we stopped for lunch and fuel. The flight was very nice. We flew at 4500' high. The flight was 143 miles. We had about a 15 mph headwind. Smooth air, cool temps. Zack did the navigating (the hard job) and I did the flying.

    After a 2.5 hour break in Alexandria, we set out for Reklaw. Because there is no fuel at Reklaw, we took enough fuel to fly there and back to Alex. We continued there at 4500'. As we approached the Toledo Bend reservoir, we saw a Cessna flying at a lower altitude on a similar flight path, so we figured he was going to Reklaw also. This leg was 152 miles and we still had about a 10 mph headwind. So this leg took about 2 hours also.

    Thanks to some good navigating by Zack we found the strip (it's normally known as a hard-to-find strip, but it helped that there were about 150 airplanes already there).

    We landed and found a group of Louisiana friends already there. So we camped near them. Our campsite was about 50 yards from a lake. Zack brought a fishing pole so he got busy scoping out the fishing scene. That night our friends, Todd and Hallie Newsome cooked some awesome steaks for a party of about 30 people. They have a Bonanza (big and fast by small-plane standards) so they can carry their kids and lots of eats. Several people told tall tales about the campfire.

    Zack and I turned in at about 8:30. We slept in Ben's tent. It got fairly cold during the night, so we ended sharing our covers.

    In the morning we had pancakes and sausage that were being served in Dave's main hangar. As we were eating, even more airplanes were flying in. Zack set out to net the fish that had taunted him the night before. Even though he got hard nibbles every time he cast, he never hooked a fish. By 10:30am we decided to pack up.

    We took off for Alexandria International at about 11:30. We had a little tailwind at 3500' and we found we had more at 5500' so we flew at 5500'. We got lunch and a 7 gallons of fuel (at $4.56/gallon!) at Alexandria. On the last leg, we were ready to get home. It was nice that we had at tailwind at 5500' of between 25 and 30 mph the whole way! We scooted home and put the airplane away.

    Tim,
    Reklaw was OUTSTANDING this year wasn't it?

    Do you know who the owner of the Tcraft was that got smacked by a Stinson while parked on the West side of the runway?

      No I don't. I didn't see either the Stinson or the TCraft. I believe that it happened while I was there because I overheard someone describing the incident to another person. It sounded like he had just witnessed the incident. He claimed that the right brake of the Stinson locked up on rollout, causing the hard turn to the right into the TCraft.

      We were parked on the other side of the lake.

        Ouch...from the picture I believe that plane is one of the three T crafts that are from Dallas. Three guys pal around (at least they used to) with each other and have a web site. They do fly bys static displays and "air racing" all offered as some kind of a "spoof" I guess. You can get to their site off the Tcraft club site I think

            Hello: I flew into Reklaw on Saturday to look at T-Crafts (I saw three). A 1941 T-Craft was damaged on the left wing by a Stinson Voyager that lost control on the turn off at the end of the turf strip. During lunch, a RV6-A collapsed a nosewheel and flipped over - the airframe was totalled. I flew in with a C210-E and dodged yellow cubs from downwind to final to experience a Piper Cherokee landing downwind at the same time - we both broke right, me to do a go around and him to disappear over the trees (he didn't return). It was quite an experience! I am looking forward to next year - hopefully in a lower and slower ship! Doc

              Yeah, it is kind of wild and wooly flying into Reklaw. The field has some fair undulations which make landings fun and can hide other airplanes from sight.

              There was also an Antonov AN-2 there. It gave some out-of-this-world looking fly-bys on Friday. That thing is so big and so slow. It also irked just about everybody within 300 feet as it parked. It prop-washed everybody north of its parking spot as it turned into position. Then it prop-washed everybody South of its spot as it reversed its prop and backed! into its parking spot. Every taildragger pilot there dreamed about landing that beast at least once.

              The morning before I went to Reklaw, I discovered that my digital camera was dead. So I didn't get any pictures. I'm still bummed. Yesterday I bought a new camera. But a picture that a buddy of mine took shows the N number of the Taylorcraft that was hit by the Stinson to be N45782. Is that one of the Texas airplanes that you're thinking about Jim?

                  Great Pics. I liked the air-to-air shots. I missed the Stinson Gullwing, but it was nice to see your pictures of it. BTW - the ones of the Top Cub on amphibious floats labled "Cajun Joe" are of Joey Leblanc, a friend of mine who lives near me here in South Louisiana.

                            Tim,
                            You asked if I thought it was one of the three Tcrafts that fly in a gaggle out of Dallas. I think it may be. Was there a Brown one there also? The guy that ownes the Brown one in the gaggle I met a couple of times when I was on Business and wandered over to the ADDISON airport in my late afternoon off time hours as us Pilots are known to do in such situations.

                              Yeah, OK, this is embarassing, but I am colorblind. I don't think of airplanes in colors so much, unless if you ask me the color of a Cub, I'll automatically say "yellow". So I don't know if there was a brown TCraft there

                              Being Colorblind means I used to have a restriction on my pilot's license saying that I couldn't fly at night or by light gun signals.

                              Reklaw is always the 4th weekend in October. As this year shows, it's not always the last weekend, but it is always the 4th weekend in Oct.
