  • stick controls anyone?

I was wondering if anyone had a T-Craft with sticks? I did an STC search & found one for stick controls, STC # SA2891SW. It was issued to swick Aircraft of Lewisville Texas, so I figured it was probably for a single-seat Swick-T clipwing conversion so maybe only had one stick.
Then I read thru the BC12D type certificate data sheet (ATC #A696) and discovered item 403 "stick type control". Item 401 is "wheel type control". But the TCDS item didn't mention any Taylorcraft drawings or part numbers, just "stick type control".
    Anybody up on this?

Sometime in the near to middle future I will be working on a stick control STC. I have no idea exactly when, first I have to put my stock airplane back in the air, then there's the 85 engine, then maybe the sticks. I hope I don't go bankrupt before then

I was thinking that if the TCDS includes stick controls as an approved item, maybe going thru the STC or field approval hassle won't be necessary. If you could come up with "approved data" (factory p/n's or drawings) they could be installed with just a 337,or maybe even just a logbook entry. When it comes to "approved data" mods (as opposed to field approvals and/or STC's),there's some differing opinions on when a 337 is required versus just a logbook entry, depending on which "expert" you ask. Whichever way your own IA and/or local FAA inspector are comfortable with would be my comment.

Before you all get too excited, the "stick type" control that is approved may not be what you think. In reality, the "stick" mounts the same way as the wheel, except that it isn't a wheel. It is basically a tube that comes out of the panel with a 90 degree bend in it so instead of a wheel it is a "stick". I saw a picture once. Not sure where. Maybe Chet Peek's book.

It was an option on prewar B models I believe for the right side only. The stick came under the panel not thru the yoke hole.I have some old ads that show it & I saw a T-craft this summer with it.

Saw a Clipped T-Craft on Barnstormers last week that had dual sticks. Any idea what that was? I could make out Experimental on the door.

Tom, how is the stick attached? Is it like the Auster control sticks? Does it mount to the same "A" frame or "H" frame above your feet? Could I get a copy of the drawings from you?

                  Re: stick controls anyone?

I wonder if the vague wording on the TCDS ("item 403: stick type control") might actually be an advantage in approval. You know, make a logbook entry or fill out a 337 "installed stick type control system as per TCDS item 403", since the TCDS doesn't reference any drawing or part numbers. Not sure if this'd work, like I said it depends on your IA &/or local FAA rep.
Might at least make for an easier field approval?

Installation of an item from aircraft TCDS equipment list requires only and A&P (actually only the A part) entry in the aircraft records (log book usually). No need for 337 or any of that stuff. See FAR 43 APPENDIX A (a)(1).

That's the good news but the bad news is that the "stick" in the equip list is just a vertical pole instead of the wheel as someone else mentioned. I saw one also, can't recall where. What bunch sales crap was my reaction to it. I don't doubt there are some real stick conversions out there but don't think those are the ones on the TCDS equipment list.

                    Dave.

Mike Swick used to sell an STC for a stick conversion, but I don't think he offers it in STC form anymore.
