  • Tires and Tubes

I have recently been hunting for tires and noticed that tube prices are absolutely ridicilous. For the most part they are more expensive than the tires!!

Am I missing something? is there a good place to purchase decently priced shoes and socks for a plane??

I've always gone through Desser. The leak-guard tubes are well worth the price.

How bad are your tubes? I've put tires on and re-used the tubes. I just replaced a very worn set of tires andd the tubes were nearly perfect so I used them.

I am looking at buying another plane that needs work. (Mooney M20) the tires are extremely dry rotted. The tubes might be ok, but I figured that I should just replace those while I have the tires off.

Check E-bay. There are several sets for sale there.

Wag-Aero use to have reasonable package deals for a pair of 4 ply tires and tubes. I've re-used tubes without any problem, just make sure there's no cracks, when there off blow them up and look real close.

              Howdy Richard,

Be sure to dust the tubes and the inside of the tires with talcom powder. This will help avoid problems encountered with split rims.

I had seen an advertisment from one vendor that they included the talcum for free!!
I was wondering what it was for.....I think I'll use the scented stuff with aloe.

                      Hey Kevin,

If you think that's bad, yesterday the guy in the hangar next to me put two new Air Flite's and tubes on his 170. This am I was at the hangar and Rich was fuming because one tire was almost flat. We pulled the wheel and Rich was convienced that the tube was bad. He was right!!! However, I pointed out to him that the resulting defect was a consequense of the tube being pinched between the two rim halfs. The sad part is, he was advised by several folks, including two A&P's, to use caution and be very careful that this exact thing didn't happen because the tube would be ruined. Now, he's down for the week-end and has to order another tube and it will be at least another week before he can aviate again.
                      Best Regards

                        Re: Tires and Tubes

That is sad.It is easy to prevent this with a little powder and some patiants however I must admitt that I've popped a few tubes myself doing the same thing. It is easy to prevent but also very so easy to do.
I changed a tire on a t-craft once that was worn out and dry rotted bad enough that I was affraid it was going to blow a tire just rolling it into the hanger. When I pulled the wheel apart I could believe what I saw.The tube had a lip on it where it had been pinched between the wheel halves for several years! Accroding to the logs those tires had been on there for almost 20 years.

                          Kevin,

I did it a little over two years ago on an experimental and I thought I was being careful!!! Just goes to show..... But, I'm like you, I don't understand why the tubes cost more than the tires!

Because there is no competition to mfg.Certified aircraft parts and they know they have us.Besides anyone who has an "airplane" will pay through the nose for its care, its the law.
