My name is John Ewing. I started working on my private five years ago and every time I get really into it,something happens.911,flights grounded,flying again,cancer,flying again,operations,operation,on and on and on..Anyway,here I am,five years later,85 hours flying time and still trying..Enough of that. Let me build up to the qustion I have. I am in remittion now by the way... I have came across a 1940 BL65 Taylorcraft that was a flying aircraft before hurricane Opel..Long time back..The plane was tied down in Alabama outside..The high winds got under her wings and broke them up bad. Busted up all the tail fethers and ripped up the fabric bad.The fuseloge and engine was not hurt..The owner was going to repair it so he stripped it all down to see what was nedded and decided not to repair it and sold it to another fellow. This guy went out and bought wings,struts and tail feathers.Wings were covered,tail feathers were not.This guy was an A&P so he tore the engine down just to see what it was like inside.He said he never buys an engine without doing this..It had 625 hrs on it sence major overhaul. This plane has a paper trail on everything going all the way back to day one.He found no trouble outher than normal wear.The engine was cleaned and the plane was put into storage until he could get the time to rebuild it. The time never came. marrige and two kids later his wife convinced him to sell it. Believe it or not,I picked it up for $4500.00. He had over $6000.00 in new (used) parts..Now,here is my qustion. I am 60 years old. I have been a certified master auto mechanis for over 30 years. I completely rebuilt and recovered a cub under the supervision of an a&p (who is no longer here) with no problems. I can do the same with this Taylorcraft BUT, I cannot afford to pay an A&P and pay to keep it certified as it should be. I can do everything myself but the plane would have to be expermintal...Can it be changed to this??How do I do that? What are your serious thoughts? By the way,my health is very good now and i get aroung very well. John
