  • Taylorcraft Wings on a Champ?

I'm building an Experimental Champ, and I am thinking about using the NACA 23012 airfoil (used on Taylorcrafts). I have heard from the clipped wing Cubs folks that Taylorcraft wings have been sucessfully adapted to Cubs and Champs with good results. Does anyone have any information on this??

While I'm at it, does anyone know the following for a BC12-D: Wing area (183 sq. ft.), wing incidence angle with a/c level (looks like 2-1/2 degrees according to the rigging data and a layout of the airfoil), Horizontal stab area and incidence angle with the a/c level, Elevator area, Max take off weight, C.G. limits, Typical cruise speeds with a 65 hp engine.

    Thanks

I've seen a photo graph @ the Supercub forum of a homebuilt Cub w/ T- Cart wings, its in the midwest somewhere..

Thanks guys, I posted this on supercub.org and got a lot of interesting pictures and some info. on the use of T'craft wings on various cubs. Still trying to find out if this has been done on a Champ. Keep me in mind if anything comes up. Thanks again, Derek

I toyed with the idea of using T-craft wings on my Champ project some years back. I didn't get much further than some preliminary measurements, but I do know that the spar spacing is different by a couple inches. I ended up trading it for a (gasp!) C-140.

Trivia. C. G. Taylor told me he built a set of 23012 wings for the E-2 when he was still at Bradford with Piper. They increased the speed a bit, but Piper nixed the change. They were hung on the factory wall and burned when the plant burned. When he built the first Taylorcraft, C G used the 23012 airfoil and the rest is history.

mostly should climb better campared to the clark. You could put F104 wings on a Champ, and it still wouldn't go fast. LOL. Sorry, couldn't resist. We only have to be humble around Luscombes.

Re: Taylorcraft Wings on a Champ?

Chet, I often wondered if the 23012 airfoil was one of the major issues Mr. Taylor had with Mr. Piper that caused Taylor to go out on his own. I do not fit in a T'craft, but always admired their speed on only 65 hp. Guess this is why I'm looking into an "Aeronocraft". Like the size and view from a Champ, but figure what the heck, if I can make it faster and still get off the ground quickly, why not look into this.

Never thought about the F-104 wings. I guess the ole T'craft will always be a little faster than the Champ. I guess us Champ guys deserve a little bashing on the T'craft web. The Super Cub guys rag on me as well, but they to have provided some good ideas and advise. I fly a jet for a living - speed is highly over rated. I'd trade 10 hrs. of jet time for 1 hr. of slow taildragger time any day of the week.

                Thanks Again Guys, Derek

I thought the part about the Luscombe put it in perspective. Guess not.

What you are looking for is called an L-2 Taylorcraft. Dick

How about the model D, later O-57, L2. The original has a "fastback" as apposed to the "greenhouse" on the L2. Amelia Reid aviation in San Jose, Calif. had 2 of them and I did my first 10 hours in one around 1970. The cylinders are out in the breeze like the cub but they flare like a Taylorcraft.
