  • oil screen

Hi Guys, just wondering how often most of you pull the oil screen. I'm due for an oil change, actually overdue with a little over 30 hours on the oil since the last change in April. Can I just drain and refill or should the screen be pulled?

    Thanks,

    Re: oil screen

I can only say I've never changed the oil without pulling the screen. I might see a reason not to fly until things are fixed. I was going to say wouldn't it be kinda like shining the toes of your shoe but not the heels. However, that is not a good comparison since way more is at stake. I found that an 8 point 1 1/4 socket works perfectly for pulling the screen. Thanks "snap on" for letting me know. Since I traded some instruction for the socket pulling the screen has not been a challenge.

Rumor has it that IF the screen is clean two times in a row ( each 25 hrs) during changes, then maybe go every other time, each 50 hrs. NOT so with a filter that is done each 50 hrs. or less..... bye Forrest

          Re: oil screen

Thanks guys for the advice. I'm ashamed to say that after being around my airplane for 40 years this is the first time that I've pulled the oil screen. Either my dad did it years ago or I had it done. Well, I've found out that it isn't so bad, I was even able to get it out past the 90 degree tach drive connection. I sloshed it around in some gasoline, it wasn't very dirty anyway. I did the whole oil change myself put in new crush washers on both the plug and the screen and everything is nice and dry. From now on I'll do it myself. There's just one thing I found a bit disconcerting. The plug on the bottom of the sump is safetied, the screen is safetied, but the oil temp probe and the nut it screws into in back of the screen is not. Its a nice tight fit and I'll keep my eye on it but I found this a bit strange. Are they all that way?

          Thanks again
