  • Notch sensitivity of 4130?

    Has anyone seen a good article on notch sensitivity of 4130?
    I've watched folks handle struts like they were newborns and wonder just how much of a scratch would you need before having to polish it out? - Mike

    My first guess would be Military Handbook 5. But there may be better ones.

              To obtain it go to this site/page;

              Download revision J, a huge file, open it up with adobe acrobat and go to chapter 2 near page 30.

                  Wow. Maybe we need to start with what version of the manual you're looking at. I have 5J, dated Jan '03. Starting with page 31 I see tables describing "Best fit S/N curves", 4130, notched sheet (NB: not tubing). That what you are looking at? - Mike

                    Mike, I looked at the same version (and also have the earlier ones). I didn't realize you wanted data for tubing. Dave

                      Yup. I'm mostly curious about something like a strut or tubing. This guy was handling my strut like a newborn and I was curious at what depth a scratch becomes something to worry about. I'll relook 43.13, because scratches are probably handled like pitting and I know that's addresed. - Mike

                        Re: Notch sensitivity of 4130?

                        Mike,

                        I suspect why you've seen people hadling struts carefully is because it's easy to bang them into other more fragile things in the vicinity. The damage caused by improper handling of struts is usually caused by dents, NOT scratches. Corrosion also takes its toll on many strust but dents or deep creases is what has caused most of the damage to struts that I've seen be made unairworthy. It's pretty hard to "scratch" a piece of steel. I also think the struts on on the older T-Crafts are most likely mild steel as compared to 4130. Anybody care to comment on that guess?

                        Regards, Roger
