  • viewport in lower part of the door

A Taylorcraft owner/friend is getting grief from the IA because the plexiglass in the lower part of the doors doesn't have a log entry. Is there an STC or 337 or whatever that covers putting viewports in the lower door?

It's likely a minor alteration and requires only an entry in the aircraft records (logs) by an A&P if so.

Verify the minor alteration status by looking at FAR 43 appendix a.

IA's concern is probably that it is undocumented and who knows what other undocumented mods are on the a/c. Probably he'll be real picky from this point forward. I would.

Thanks, Dave. This is another case history of an old airplane swapping owners several times. No one knows when the doors were modified.
The good thing is the current owner is trying to bring everything into compliance.
Since this is a non-structural modification, I think we'll ask the IA to suggest a log entry after inspection proves the mod is sound.
