  • Storing wings?

Well, things are looking good at the moment.
There is a Tcraft not far away (wings and tailfeathers are off) that if the pre-purchase goes well, I will buy. Next problem was finding a place to work on it. Visited the grass strip that promises hanger space by October and talked with Larry, who sez we could hoist the wings up and against the wall. He's willing to rent hanger space for the fuselage. It doesn't hurt that he has one of every tool and is willing to let me use anything I need.

Now, storing the wings: I'm only familiar with 'A' frames cradling wings at floor level.

Has anyone hoisted a wing for storage? if so, could you please describe it? - Mike

I have done that Mike. I use two good straps abt. 3" wide over a rib not to cause damage and just hoist it up the wall.

      Just two straps. OK.
Pulleys? or large eye bolts? - Mike

Mike I use Eye bolts, but pulleys would be better. I had help putting them up and down.

          I'm set then.
There is a carpet store around the corner and there is always discarded carpet laying around, so I'll make 2-3 slings about 2' wide (making sure to line the eyebolts with ribs) and pull them up. Now, it the seller would straighten out the ownership, I"ll be in great shape. better design something to keep the alerions from flopping around. Thanks, Mike

you want more than a 2" wide strap. I'll post some pics later tonight when I get back from the airport of a set of floor stands made with 2 x 6's and a some carpet. And a pic of a set of BC12D wings hanging off the wall with rope through the fwd spar attach and front strut fitting. It will probably be late because I plan on finishing up the install of my overhauled A65 and trying to get a few break-in hours on her before dark. The engine overhaul story is worth starting a whole nother thread!

              Mike:

I attached a 16inch wide by 12 feet long shelf to the wall of my shop. Two people can easily lift a wing up onto the shelf. The wings sit on their leading edges on the shelf and lean against the wall.

Works great and no chance of damage since the weight of the wing is distributed over the entire 12 feet width of the shelf. Cheap too, I used 8 cheapo shelf brackets screwed to the wall studs and 2 1X8X12' boards. I told the wife we could use the shelf to store paint and stuff after the wings move out!

Is there a gap just aft of the leading edge?

Jason - Obviously both fittings were designed to withstand forces perpendicular (compression) to the wing; by attaching to the fittings as you do, you have the fittings working "in shear". You comfortable with that? - Mike

                      Re: Storing wings?

Sure is Ron, just missing the slats. We are working on 4 helio couriers at the same time so 3 sets of these stands were built one afternoon to help keep the wings out of the way.

Well Mike, I did think about that before lifting them up but ya gota figure there is way more strength in those fittings than needed to hold the wing up with out failure. Truly I was more concerned with me falling out of the rafters while tying them up.

Like Bob I also have a skinny shelf on one wall that was made to hold a set of wings for an EAA bipe. works great and is up high enough that I can push my plane all the way back to the wall and the wings(the ones on the plane) fit under the shelf with room to spare.
