I looked at a Tcraft in the local area. It was missing the registration and the Airworthiness certificate. Are either of these documents difficult to reconstruct? - Mike

Re: Missing Registration and Airworthiness Cert
Registration, no problem, you will file for a new one anyway. The current owner is responsible for the missing one.
Airworthiness certificate may be no big deal if you have a close-by FSDO, which we do here, although all I have done is replace old, worn out ones, which is a 10-minute walk in process. I would call them tomorrow, and ask. (before buying the plane, of course)Steve

Re: Missing Registration and Airworthiness Cert
Mike:
Steve is correct about the registration certificate.
The airworthiness certificate could be a problem. I've been involved in quite a few a/w certificate replacements....if you are merely exchanging an old worn or torn certificate for a new one, it's usually a simple matter. To replace a missing a/w certificate I've experienced a range of requirements, from a simple "let me check the database and if it's ok I'll issue a new one" to having the FSDO airworthiness inspector perform a conformity inspection. I would advise everyone to make a copy of their airworthiness certificate and registration certificate and place the copies in a safe place. If the certificates are lost or stolen you at least have proof that you did at one time did have them and could make replacement easier.

Re: Missing Registration and Airworthiness Cert
Just go to your fsdo with the dataplate, logs, and new registration and they will issue you a new AW Cert. Tell them you wish to have a new AW certificate because yours is lost. No big deal. If you can not locate the logs then you will need to perform an annual/ new AD compliance record, and record that in the newly created logbook. Bottom line is that youhave to have a data plate. Read FAA Order 8130.2F change 1 Section 2 paragraph 27. That is our guidance on what is required.
I highly recommend you get the cd from aircraft registry - that way you can see everything the faa has on file- if it has ever been de-resistered or listed as destroyed that could complicate the process.Eric Minnis
