  • Insurability??

How can I find out in advance if a company will insure me after this accident?
Anyone had any experience with a history of multiple claims?
Hate to go looking for an aircraft only to find I was uninsurable! - Mike

      Re: Insurability??

Mike . Mind you I am NOT a Property/Casualty underwriter nor an Aviation insurance expert. I did spend over 20 years of my life selling to the executives of these very companys though and have a feel for the industry.
SOO here comes the bad news. First if one has 1 accident in say a 10 or 20 year period of flying then thats not so bad as long as its not a total . IF it is Then severity becomes an issue to them and while it is not a non insure decision it does definently mean a higher premium (how high these days I do not know but high-ER than if there was no accident.)
Now if one has had two accidents with in a reasonably short period of time like 4 years or less then the premiums start to run off the chart ... but alas this is as compaired to a non accident premium soo "off the chart" is not revelant if one can afford the premium......
Now worst case. If one has had more than one accident in less than say two years and is a new pilot (low hours) then they will be really be ready to lay a fat cat premium on you OR make a decision to pass. One may be able to lessen this with additiional training that helps proves sound judgment and decision making on the students part.

Your mileage may vary. I wish you all the best and am very sorry this happened (or happens as it does/did to others.. some not with us) to a fellow aviator and friend of Taylorcrafts.

        Re: Insurability??

Mike: Talk to your agent as flylo advised. If you have a problem make sure that all possible insurers have been checked with. They may suggest your doing a higher deductible or even liability only with no hull coverage. You can also talk to Avemco directly and see what they would do. I don't know your hours or your complete loss history but just make sure you have an experienced aviation agent (not someone who just dabbles in it or only goes to one or two insurers) who knows all the carriers and can use some pull if needed.

Mike, Avemco is a direct marketer and has always provided me with the straight scoop(and best prices for the coverage) I assumed you were not going to look for full coverage but again just ask them. They insured me when I started with my craft with ZERO tail wheel hours with full 25K hull and Million liab for around 1200 back in 1999. They only wanted 5 hour dual as I recall. We have had a good relationship in the past 500 hours. Good folks.

All the best and best regards to you Mike

            Mike,

I am also very sorry about your misfortune. Some folks are throwing around insurance names and aside from Avemco, also look at AUA (Aviation Unlimite Agency) They got me similar coverage to what was in another reply with 15K hull insurance for about 675 per year- and that is with less than 200 hours total time, 150 in Tailwheel. They are good people and easy to talk to. Like Avemco, they will give you the straight scoop.
