Rob Lees suggested converting my fixed windows to sliding windows using the existing sliding window design. I assume this involves tracks top and bottom and a handle of some sort on the moving section.

Does anyone have a drawing/sketch or photo of the sliding window design?

      Re: Sliding window

      Bob,
How strange. I have sliding plexiglass windows in my 46 and have been considering replacing them with one piece of Lexan. The plane was in the desert for some time and the sand beetween the two sections scratched them really bad from sliding the windows back and forth. I know the same thing will happen to replacements so I was going to put the little round rotating vent that Aircraft Spruce sells in the fixed windows if I changed them. The air flows really close to the surface there and those vents will catch plenty of air. ( witness sticking your fingers out the window about an inch.)

I have the rotating vents and they work very well, but wish I had a sliding window. On very hot days (over 85 F) I have to believe that the sliding windows would let more air in the cabin than the rotating vents.

I have the rotating vents in my plane. On hot days (it's Texas you know) they just don't move enough air. I plan to remove my windows for summer flying.

a "snap-vent" seems to work the best. My sliders don't bring in much air at all compared to my buddies with the snap-vents.

Same experience here. The air goes right past the open window unless you are in a slip or skid.
I think there are some little door like vents available that put a "plate" out into the slipstream; that should get a lot of air moving thru for the guys who live in the hot, humid regions.
It gets hot here, but it's a dry heat. Really.

                Re: Sliding window

I have the windows that pop out at the bottom, and they cool the plane just fine here in west Texas. One reason might be that the fairing that covers the hole for the landing gear bungees is not on the plane, and that might allow the wind to flow through better.

What is a "snap vent"? Here in Georgetown the only time I get to cool off is when I am flying sideways while coming in for a landing.

I can't find my TOC Newsletters.....but I remember there being a drawing in one of them for a little piece of shaped aluminum that you could flip into the windstream for the sliding window guys.

                      Anyone have that issue?

                          Richard,

The TOC Newsletter issue you are looking for is June 2002 page 2.

                          Hope this helps.

Thanks Don. Unfortunately, I can't find them. That is the downside of organizing and cleaning up. Now I can't find anything!

I hear you Richard. I just (a couple of months ago) put all my News letters since 1994 in a single binder so that they are a hand grip away on my Aircraft memo referance stuff. I need to call Bruce about reprinting anything. Copyright rules should apply regardless of what(sigh in my opinion) a license to steal elected official/lawyer says . Treating a fellow brother with respect and courtesy should matter This needs an answer as I had stated earlier in another post where someone was looking for someone to put all the old newsletters on the site. I really do not think that is right unless Bruce Bixler says so . I will follow up with Bruce. JIM
