  • Question about the nitrate coating..

I understand butyrate dope doesn't adhere to dacron, so our initial coating is of nitrate. If one were presented with a piece of dacron that had been coated with nitrate, could one see the coating? I'm under the impression the nitrate soaks in, and a visual inspection might not reveal anything. Mike

Re: Question about the nitrate coating..

Most companys have come up with a coating that you apply first such as Dac-proofer (super-flite), and Rand-o-proof (Randolph). It soaks through the fabric and bonds to it self and give you a good adheision point for the rest of your coats of dope. It needs to be thinned with a thinner and I would recommend a retarding thinner so that it has time to soak thru the fabric and bond to it self on the back side..But to answer your question, most of these coating are tinted so you can see them.. Hope this helps
