      Mike, Problem's not the wind so much as the haze this time of year. Higher altitude, less visibility, can only see down.
      pick a day when a high pressure front passes, clear sky - some wind. use suggested min. alt. on sectional. good flying.
      don't worry about the turbulence, use it to gain alt.
      But do calculate fuel burn for max headwind!
      After crossing the mtns start descending without reducing throttle, you'll wind up in Alliance with more altitude than you need.

      On a recent flight from gulf coast to north alabama, 95901 and myself went to 7000 ft playing the thermals. At cruise power of course. 150 mi from home, I pushed over without retarding throttle. 100 mi later only down to 5000 ft, doing 120 indicated. 2400 rpm. What a wing!
      3 hrs non-stop, burned 13 gals autofuel.
