  • What GPS do you use?

I've been using my $125 Magellen 315 since I've had the beast and it's worked fine except for two thing. It eats up batteries, and doesn't have a "Oh, *$*#@, where's the nearest airstrip" function.

I solved the battery problem by driving the GPS with a 7AmpHr gel cell, but it's arkward and heavy.

I'm looking for an inexpensive GPS that doesn't eat up batteries and has the "find nearest" function. Moving map is not a requirement.

If you've got a model you'd like to recommend, I'd like to hear about it.
    Thanks, Mike

    None.

Taylorcrafts have been flying for years without them. If you need one,. then go get a cessna and drive that.

Okay, im off my soapbox now. Im gonna chop some firewood and churn some butter.

I also have used a Magellan 315 for several years and find it is the most cost effective solution. Will probably keep using it until it dies. Usually get 12 to 14 hours out of the batteries. Really like that you can customize the screens and the large letters on one of the screens. Check the waypoints or marks and then menu, the sort and you have a choice of how to sort - choose nearest.

I also sometimes use a 315(only in the cessna haha) & also get about 12 hrs on a set of batteries.Make sure the backlit option is off.I think you can set it to come on any time a key is pressed & stay on a predetermined time. You would never see on in daytime & use batteries fast.Just a thought!

            Howdy Mike,

I have a Garmine 196. It has all of the features you want + some. Mine is hardwired into the electrical system but if you use Nicad rechargable batterys you can get about 6 hrs per charge if you don't use the backlight.

Lowrance airmap 1000, big screen, initial cost was $475. Two buttons for nearest airport, 6 - 8 hours on 4 aa batteries. haven't tried re chargables since they need to be re charged if not used right away. I had pretty much decided on the Garmin 196 until I fount the Lowrance at the above price.

Regular "AA" bateries give the 12 to 14 hours. The above advise to turn off the backlit option is a good one. Also, turn off alarms and beep when keying input.

garmin "GPS PILOT III" 24hrs on 4 AA bateries. I mostly use it for testing and when exploring off airport.

I thought "GPS" ment Good Piloting Skilles, and your talking Batterys? And $475 dollars?
I just use an out of date sectional or an old road map. The older the better. Most of the airports I go to are not on any map anyway. The first T-craft I owned only went to airports on a map for fuel. Just having fun.

No kidding - use a GPS and your pilotage goes out the window. Need to polish that skill.
