Once you see what a nice job they do you may not want to put it back on the plane to get all messed up!

I never blackened mine. It is only a problem when the sun is low and directly behind you and not really much of a problem then. It is a shame to paint that beautiful varnish black. It is also so slippery when fresh that black paint might not stick so well.

In the early days of WW2 They painted the wood props black or OD but soon discovered that they absorbed so much heat that the props warped. Dick

This is the first time I have heard of this......Mine is just varnished. I have never had a problem with visibility and actually thought it looked cool when the sun hit it just right an I could see the arc!

I do most of my flying early Sunday morning, so the sun is behind me on a left base for 27.

                    Re: Wood prop

"Flicker Vertigo" normally happens facing a low sun but I guess you guys are especially talented! It is avoided by not staring at the prop. Some of my students were hypnotized by the runway on their first few landings!

A strobe effect (Prop appears to stop) can be simulated on the ground at night with a fluorescent light directly in front of the plane with the rpm at numbers divisible by sixty, 1200 and 1800 are easiest. This is an excellent way to check your tach accuracy. An incandescent light may work too, I never tried one. It just has to by 60hz power.
