Re: Why did my instructor freak out?

Remember guy, as long as all the major part are still there and no blood, well you are ok.

Been an instructor for over 40 years, and have had my share of bounce and goes. Some were not pretty. But guess I have been lucky, never damaged one and all my students learned something each time.

Go fly, when you return, wipe the smile off your face and save the airplane.

Soon, I will be finished my annuala and can go flying again. Man this has been the annual from hell. I know an annual is supposed to be once a year, not a year to complete it.

My Dad ; Al Barber ( flew test work for C.G. back in 1941) said a real bad bounce was one that you could spin into the ground if not careful.
WE are going to fly the Model A ser# 25 ( the Prototype) today!! I hope

Re: Why did my instructor freak out?

According to the FAA here in Alaska, approx. 35% of all general aviation accidents in Alaska over the last 5 years involved failure to execute a timely go-around. If it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't! Dick

I always say that you need to do it right, but it doesn't have to be the first time, you can go around and try again.

Well, I think I'll sit here with the guy on the bench in front of the FBO and watch the gusts to 25 and tell myself I'd rather be here wishing I were there than there, wishing I were on the ground. Next try on Tues. - MIke

Re: Why did my instructor freak out?

Although illegal, immoral, and probably fattening, one of the nicest things about a Taylorcraft is that if the crosswind gets to the point where the airplane cannot handle it, you can turn into the wind and land across the runway. I have not done it myself personally, but I think I know of a Basset Hound owner or two that probably have!

My personal maximum was in Blythe, California in 1998 with my 85HP BC-12D. The taxiway that ran along side of the runway had about a 100 or 150 foot long connecting strip that ran at a 45 degree angle to the runway. That 45 degree strip was directly into the 20 G 35 wind, so that's where I plopped down.

No. it wasn't floating onto a sandbar in Alaska with the Grizzly bears applauding in the background, but it was a pretty fair arrival for a city boy on desert asphalt
