    Re: Ak, fairbanks fatality

Dan, I just found this in the Fairbanks newspaper on the internet. You might have to copy and paste to make it work.

Dick Smith and Lance Desaw both appear to have yellow Taylorcrafts based on posts that they have made showing their ships. Sure hope it is no one we know from here. for that matter I hope its not a Taylorcraft if it indeed has to be something. Some wonderful pictures and stories came forth from last Winter. Look forward to hearing /seeing more next winter. Jim

The Fairbanks Newspaper on the internet says the pilot was Anthony L. Payne 38 and his female passenger taken to the hospital with fractures was Amal R. Ajmi 36.

Rember, when you open your eyes in the morning and don't see a lot of your friends, a bunch of flowers and a preacher-it's going to be a GREAT day!

The friend I sold my second Tcart to loaned it to a to a guy to fly down to So cal to get his seaplane license. The engine quit taking off at Tehachapi and he tried to turn back. Spun it in. Sure makes you feel like crap for a while when it happens in your old airplane. You keep thinking how the airplane would talk to you if you got it too slow: how could he do that? It's really sad.
My first one I put in a pickle weed field (straight ahead) when it quit. Flew it out about an hour later. Lesson: NEVER let anyone put automotive permagasket on your carburetor gaskets and drain your carb bowl regularly. And: Land straight ahead like your instructor taught you to many years ago.

                  Daryl,

I don't have any time at all on floats. I seem to recall, from somewhere, that the floats increase parasitic drag and substantially change the handling characteristics of the aircraft and cause it to become inclined to spins, from which recovery is difficult. Is this the case?

By the way, sorry that you had an association with the acft and the owner. It certainly nothing to do with you but I know the feeling.
