  • PA-11 Comparison with T-craft

    Hi Tribe,
    Could you compare the bush performance of a 90hp or 115hp PA-11 (no electrics approx. 800lbs) with the light (no electrics approx. 800lbs) Model 19.
    I know with the 1500lb gross the Model 19 has better hauling capacity versus the PA-11's 1220lbs. What about take-off capability, by the sounds of things the Model 19 only performs (as in take-off performance) good at light loads so is the gross weight an issue as far as that is concerned?
    I know that the Model 19 will or should cruise faster. Is that true? Some of what I've been reading here seems that when a Model 19 is outfitted for the bush with a climb prop that they don't cruise that fast anyway.
    What about the F21, would that outperform the Model 19 and/or the PA-11?

    Trying to figure this out,
    Dale

    Re: PA-11 Comparison with T-craft

    Wartwing, I am a fan of Taylorcrafts (Duh) over Pipers for certain. I would choose the Model 19 due to its better cruise (no matter how it is fittted vs a similaraly fitted PA11) Also the fact that it has a much higher usefull load and last but not least a better record of fewer AD' s which is born out in real life/death reports (read the accident reports). NOW having just given my admitted bias towards the T Craft , YOU may prefer the Cub because it does appear that you are looking for short field capabilities over all else (reading between the lines of what you state) Therefore the Piper I would think is the better plane for you due to the differences in the airfoil(s). The Clark Y is without a doubt the better short field wing for your purpose to be . That said , keep an eye out for the Taylorcraft passing you hauling more and flyin better ! Good Luck in your decision. No perfect plane just tradeoffs !

      Re: PA-11 Comparison with T-craft

      Dale Its hard to say what aircraft is better between the t-craft and the pa-11 i have a few frinds with pa-11s on wheels i think they are about the same i can go everywhere they go. I have flown both you can see very well in the pa-11 but the cruse suffers about 10 to 15 mph slower. In turbalance i think the t-craft hadles better i have had bruses on both sides of my legs from the stick in a pa-11. On floats is where the t-craft will out perform the pa-11. my good frind one day had a pass and full fuel in his 100hp pa-11 we were on a small lake out in the bush. It was about 80 deg i had the t-craft at gross 1500lbs. I took off with no problems was airborn halfway down the lake. My buddy couldnt even get on step so he had to leave his buddy behind so he could get off the lake and i had to go back and get him after i dropped my pass of at a larger lake. My buddy has a t-craft now. He says he missis the pa-11 but he has a t-craft.

        Re: PA-11 Comparison with T-craft

        I have owned both A PA-11 (65) and of course the yellow duck (plus a couple others).

        They both have their advantgages and disadvantgages. Short field same HP PA-11 wins. Speed T-Craft wins. Looks, your choice. Tandem vs Side by Side, again your choice. Wheel vs Stick, your choice. COST T-Craft wins.

        So hell, I don't know. If money is no object, flip a coin. You will win which ever way it falls.

          Thanks Jim, Lance, and Lee;

          I appreciate your insights very much. Hey Lance could you ask your buddy if he'd mind if I telephoned him to ask him about the PA-11 vs. the T-Craft?
          As far as looks go I like both the piper and t-craft! Can't go wrong there! The properly set-up t-craft seems harder to find than the PA-11, or am I just too impatient? How often do you come across bush set-up t-crafts?What about resale value? Some say that the piper will hold its value and/or appreciate more, albeit with a higher initial investment. I'd rather spend less money for comparative performance, that's why I'm here. I like what you said Lance about the t-craft being better in turbulence and outperforming the 11 on floats, even though I won't be on floats. I'm trying to check out(9 hour drive) both types this week, the 11 is for sale and I don't think that the t-craft is (maybe that should tell me something!). I just don't want to jump on something just because its available now, I keep telling myself that I'm not in a hurry.
          Thanks again.
