  • Fuel Cap

I know that no one else has done this , but in case you should happen to leave your fuel cap someplace besides on the tank, here is how I made one:

    Bill of Materials:
Wag Aero fuel cap that "fits a J-3".
Brass tubing of appropriate diameter from the hobby store.
Silver Solder, .062 diameter from Radio Shack.

Drill the center of the fuel cap to exactly fit the brass tube. Test fit the tube to see how deep it goes in and mark this spot on the tube so you can see where to begin bending it.

Fill the tube with sand and bend a right angle in the tube while heating the bend area with a propane torch, not too much heat is needed. In order to hold the tube while you are bending it, you can use the next size larger brass tubing (it comes in sizes that telescope together) or you can insert a length of piano wire into the end of the tubing. Alternatively, just grab the tubing with Vice Grips and cut off the spoiled portion.

File a fish mouth in the end of the tube that goes into the fuel cap so that air can pass more easily.

Test fit the fuel cap on the plane. Mark which way is forward! If the cap fits on the plane too tightly, use a large screw driver to bend the locking ears downward just a little. Silver solder the brass tube onto the fuel cap with the open end of the tube facing forward.

If desired, put a dimple or two of solder on the perimeter of the fuel cap to make it easier to grip.
    Best Regards,

    Re: Fuel Cap

Good info Mark and thanks for sharing. I now replace my cap with a standard cap when not flying as Wayne suggested because of water running down the float wire into the fuel. Unless careful and diligent in putting the float cap away after replacing it with the standard cap,a person would be more likely to lose it than just using your float cap exclusively. After all, where is the float cap going to go other than right back in place...? Well...hopefully!
