  • Lyc o-145 Carb Heat Box & Exh ?

Thank you Gentlemen, for the welcome and offer of help last week. This week I am looking for a carb heat box for the o-145 lycoming.

Need advice on exhaust stack installation. Do the exhaust stacks just hang, with clamps, on the screwed in exhaust sleeves in the head of the o-145? The right side exhaust has a 2" by 1/2" piece of tubing welded on the exhaust stack. The stub does not enter the stack, just welded on the inboard side at about a 45 deg. angle. What is it for? Thanks in advance, Don Hernke

    Don,

The stacks use clamps that have a pin or spur on the inside diameter that goes right thru the stack and into the exhaust stub. That helps prevent the stack from blowing off. But that's not the whole story. The short tubes welded on the side of the each stack is to accomadate a brace. The two stacks are braced together with a piece of tubing that slips over the two short pieces and a bolt goes thru each end form an "H". But there's still more. Then there a two more pieces of tubing that forms an inverted V that goes from ends of the center bar of the H up to the bottom of the crankcase to hold and support the whole thing. It might sound complicated but it's really not. In the end you have a fairly well supported exhaust system. I believe that this bracing system was the result of a factory service bulletin from the late thirties. I've seen a diagram of this somewhere in my files. If I can put my hands on it I'll try to get it posted for you or I can mail you a copy.
Good luck with the project and welcome to the "tribe".
