  • Thinking about a transponder

I've from time to time strapped a 12v.gel cell battery to the frame to run my GPS and handheld.

I've been thinking about a transponder (since I'm close to the DC TFR) and without it, my flying options are limited.

Obviously I'll need a transponder that doesn't pull a lot of current. Glider pilots probably have the same problem.

    1. Has anyone else mounted a 'temporary' transponder (portable) in their Tcraft?
    2. Other characteristics I should look for beside power drain?
    3. Since this is a 'temporary' installation, can I bypass some of the certification requirements of the transponder? i.e. if I find one that works and it doesn't have a yellow tag, is that OK?
    4. Is there an economical way to purchase one? I think a new one is about $1000.

Mike you seem to be a sort of temporary kind of guy . BUT I recommend installing it correctly, test it according to regs, use it wisely ( do not pass through "hijack" codes while changing codes, etc... The scope does not know if you are a Taylorcraft or a terrorist..... Check your 6 for any F-16's at all times....bye Forrest

Forrest - well, if I mount anything permanently I get involved in paperwork - Mike

Mike, I also have been given this some thought. I had one in my L-2. Worked great. I think that the Beacker offers a good choice, a bit more than $1K tho. About 1800-2000 dollars, but light and compact.
