  • Oil Temp Guage

    Hello all,

Recently my oil temp guage died. I replaced it with one from wag aero, but am having some problems with it. Included are some pics...... Ever since the install I am getting some oil leakage. If you grab the wire it moves slightly in and out at the oil screen (this is of course why it is leaking).

The adapter sent with the new guage is very different from the one on the tcraft. At least it is different where it screws into the oil screen housing. If you look at the differences between the two adapters, several things jump out. The adapter sent will not work. The nut that is on the guage has a flange that the old oil temp guage doesn't. Is there an adapter with the flange internally but fits our tcraft??

Hopefully the pictures will show what is happening as describing it is a bit difficult.

    thanks,

    Re: Oil Temp Guage

Nothing to do with being a Taylorcraft. That is a common adapter for the standard oil screen , temp bulb on the back of many Continental engines.
Wag Aero does not have the correct bulb lip. The diameter inside for the adapter is also not correct. I have had many folks bring me this set up and I show them that there is no way it will work without leaking.
I saw a A-65 pump out 3 quarts just taxiing back for take - off...

Buy the correct temp guage OR take the risk & have an adapter made.

      Forest,

Thanks, that was good info! Now.....where do I get the "correct" temp guage? Is it enough that the temp guage be listed for a "lycoming,Continental" engine (like it is in spruce)?

      thanks

        Re: Oil Temp Guage

IF it was a tractor, I would place some copper washers under the bulb (between the bulb and its thinner flange and the adapter on the engine case) to shim the bulb out so it would be in compression with the nut correctly torqued. The flage is too thin because its a repro made of thinner material so the nut can't compress the flage against the case adapter and make a tight seal

Of course this is not for a tractor.

The two cases of this I have had, I sent the instument out for repair and they were able to source a bulb of the proper size and thickness. Now if I could just remember where?
