  • Exhaust Replacement / Conversion

I realize there have been many archived posts on the topic of converting or replacing the exhaust, I have read through most of them. However, my question is in reference to estimating what is needed and the cost to convert from the Taylorcraft Exhaust on a C85-8 short mount? I'm trying to plan for the future. The mild steel exhausts don't seem to last, and pulling the engine/mount off the firewall to remove the original design and fighting with shrouds at annual seem to be a shortcoming of the design. So I'm considering purchasing the STC to convert to Luscombe. Has anyone that has done it have information or know where I can get information on what parts are needed and good sources so I may project what is involved and cost? In reading the archives, I found some threads where come were putting C150 exhaust on Taylorcrafts, but didn't come across an STC.

Thank you for help and information

    Re: Exhaust Replacement / Conversion

Taylorcraft BC-Series or DC-Series Conversion to Dual Exhaust (Luscombe 8E-style) Comes with installation drawings and DER 8110-3 Approval ...

Is this what you're considering? No STC just approved data and list of FAA-PMA parts available from suggested vendors. C-150 exhausts are mainly Field Approved installations I believe. At least mine was. The Luscombe setup is louder in my opinion and may not offer as much heat output as the Cessna. Power output of the two should be tested.

Add: https://shop.classicaero.info/main.sc They may have parts and further info as well?

I believe Terry Bowden a member of this Forum has and sells an STC to install the Luscombe exhaust, do a forum search and you will discover it here.

Thanks, I had already gone to Terry's webpage and looked at what I could of the STC. My question is what parts would be needed so I can estimate the cost of doing a conversion vs installing the stock system. If converting to Luscombe is say $4000 when replacing a mild steel taylorcraft system is $850, I'd probably stay stock.

A couple of weeks ago on Barnstormers I saw a luscombe pair of exhaust stacks left and right with the heat shrouds for $300 . Check under Luscombe it may still be there, The STC is $250

I understand the risk of buying the STC just to discover the parts required. Send Terry a request for parts list so you can explore that option? It won't be $4,000 in parts I believe. Call the Luscombe folks and ask the same. Or find a plane with a set and for $10 order from the FAA N-number's Form 337 to see what was required for parts and approval.

This thread has a parts list from Terry:

This was linked here earlier by Terry Bowden on Doug Combs' Luscombe heater shroud improvement. Adding door springs to any heat muff works.
