  • Looking for Jonathan Morgan

Jonathan Morgan (NC95842; member id) stopped by my home on his trip to South America via Mexico.

He spent the better part of two days then left, Thursday Dec. 27, 2005 for Houston to pick up his visa.

Have not heard from him since and have not seen any posting. He was on his BMW motorcycle. Loaded and the weather was not good.

I have his phone number that he posted on the site and will call tonight.

Hope some one else has heard from him.

Thanks Norm. Still concerned about Jonathan. Have not heard anything and called his cell and his home. Got a voice mail, but no reply. It will be a week since he left my home.

He had said he wanted to cronicle his trip on the T-Craft webb site. He has his lap top and camera. We went flying in the Duck and he took bunch of pictures. Said he would put them on his site also. I checked, nothing.

      Worried,

Did you happen to notice his tag number. If we had that we could do a check to make sure he wasn't in an accident.

            Travel update: #2

Note: the long haired guy kissing the girl in the pictures is not me! Some of my friends thought I had started my trip off on the right foot. That is Daniel and Janet. Jessica’s little sister.

More pictures have been added to the web. A still cannot upload my videos because it only takes MPEG and I have AVI’s if any of you know of a site I can upload them to tell me, Or if you know of any conversion software.

            Hi friends,

So much has happened since my last email. I have been having so much fun!

I went to New Orleans, LA and then continued on to Lafayette, LA where there is a hostel/Road House. The place was great, with wireless internet, Elk for pot luck on the full moon and bands playing 5 nights a week.

On the 26th I got a hold of a guy with a Taylorcraft airplane just like mine. He is on a message board that I frequent for Taylorcraft owners (www.vb.taylorcraft.org) and when I saw where he lived I sent word that I was in town. 1 hour later I was at has house taking pictures as he rolled his plane named "yellow duck" out the hanger.

We flew to 3 different airports and I got some pictures of the Tabasco factory on Avery Island, LA. When we landed at his house his wife Shirley was sitting on the porch drinking a longneck. I knew I was in the right place. That night they took me out to a joint that was deep with local tradition. We ate Crawfish and danced to a Cajon band. Afterwards they drove me back to the hostel to get my things so I could stay at there place for the night. When we got there the band was going full steam! They had 4 guitars, 5 fiddles, 2 squeeze boxes, bass and drums. Lee and Shirley are booth nearing 70, but you would never know it. They were the life of the party!

The next day I had a hard time leaving. It was 2:00 pm when I said my goodbyes.

I road hard through some typical Louisiana flat lands, But when I hit Texas I was cold… very cold. I finally stopped just past Beaumont, TX for the night at a motel 6. On Friday I took off early for Houston to go see the Brazilin Consulates office for a visa. The place was in a tall glass office building in the rich part of town. I had to run all over to get pictures and type up an itinerary that was complete bullshit to try to satisfy the little pissed off Chinese guy working there that day. At the end of the day I had all my papers in order, but they would not accept any applications after 2:00 pm. However the good news was that I can go to the consulates office in Argentina or Peru and get it done very easily. I sat in the parking deck watching the traffic creep along I-610 for an hour while talking to martin and Robert on the phone. Martin was up in Norfolk, VA dropping off a car to be shipped to Sweden and sold as a hot-rod. He told me that his old truck was making some loud noises but replacing the alternator fixed it, sort of. More on that in a min…

I road in traffic for about 2 hours on my way to go see some family of Eric’s in Bryan, TX. 40 miles away I stopped in a parking lot to look at my maps when the owner of the place who was working late came over asked about my trip.

His name was Billy Frazier not William or Bill but Billy. He tells me that’s just the way they do things in Texas. Billy told me some amazing stories about his life.

He had worked as a teacher in Mexico. When he came back to Texas, he told the local bank owner about Mexico. That guy went down there and fell in love with a community of Indians around the copper canyon area. Now the banker goes down there 2 or 3 times a year and every time he goes down there he brings back as many hand crafts as possible. They sell them in Billy’s store and all the money goes to the Indians. Now the village has a little medical clinic and a lot better quality of life. At Billy’s new store he has 13 acres of land and he is building a Zen meditation garden in the woods for all to use. He gave me a big boost of enthusiasm and offered me a place to stay but I was on my way to see Chris, Leah, Sabean and June in Bryan.

Chris and Leah took me right in, and put me up in a funky, very cool little garage apartment. They even had a spot in there for my bike. The next day we all went to a little Mexican restaurant downtown Bryan that had the best tex-mex I have ever had. And cheap, too.

As we were about to leave Martin called me and said that he didn’t want to bather me but he had just set a new recorded for poll vaulting a Ford F150. Apparently his transmission was the cause of the noise. It locked up, broke the driveshaft at the front U- joint, pushed the shaft in to the ground and launched the truck. The truck managed to land on its wheels probably because it had a double axel car carrier attached to a homemade hitch. Martin called his neighbor Robin who the drove 250 miles in his brothers truck to get him. They put Martin’s truck on the trailer and made it back to Charlotte, NC by 8:00 am. And I thought my travels were hard.

That night I road to Austin, TX to pick up some motorcycle parts I had paid for over the phone and asked if they could hide them outside for me. That ride was very enjoyable. In Texas even the small country roads have 70 mph speed limits on them. It was like charismas finding a place I had never been to before and picking up exactly what I needed. That night I stayed with Chris and Leah’s brother Dan or as some call him Danno. He took me out on the town, and what a town it was. I have never seen so many night clubs in one spot. Austin is a partying city. I wish I would have taken my camera with me. The next day Danno and his father took me out to breakfast it a cool little Chinese place where you would sit at your table and servers would come by offering you different dishes of food. All of which was made with shrimp.

At about 2:00 pm I was on the road south. It was raining and cold… 42 degrees. I have been I shity weather since the first day when I left savannah. It does not seem to be any better for the next 3 days! I am having a really good time, but this weather is testing me. I have been on the road for 9 days riding through the Deep South. I have only been able to camp out one night and I have yet to ride in comfort. It looks like the rain and cold will fallow me about 250 miles in to Mexico as well… enough bitching.

Yester day I road 300 miles south on Texas back roads the landscape was like a dream. The trees and tan planes looked completely Texas. Which is totally different then what I am used to. And the fog and clouds hung low in the valleys. There were historic forts and churches from times of Texas being its own country. When I got to Kingsville, TX home of the King Ranch. I was about to fall asleep. So I hoteled it again. Today I plan to mail some things home, pickup some gas cans and ride to Mexico!

            I love you all,

            Jonathan Morgan

              Jonathon,
Thanks for the update. Shirley & I were really beginning to worry. You know how old people are. lol One correction, she is not pushing 70 but rather dragging 65. Will be 64 (her) Feb. 6th And I was 67 this past April.

Shirley said you are having so much fun, it makes her want to kick her Harley out and ride in the rain also. It hasn't stopped rainning since you left. And, will continue through the week-end.

Sunday is Shirley's birthday, and they decided to have the "Super Bowl" on that date to celebrate her birthdate. So we will be fixing Chicken,Sausage & Oyster Gumbo, with rice and potatoe salad. You'll come now !!!!

Keep us posted, sounds likelots of fun

Looked at all the pictures. FYI : The yellow T-Craft is the yellow duck, photos of my hangar, taking off, landing, Tabasco Factory, and Work Over Drilling Rig.

You gotta love it, you gotta be in Louisiana.

                Jonathan, keep the pictures coming.

                  He Old man,
The duck sure looks good.Nice pictures Jonathan. The young couple takes me back to the good old days(at least a week ago,HAHA!).
Lee,if ya want a bird with electrics why don't you just start collecting the parts ya need and this summer or early fall ya can fly her up here(or maybe I can come down there)and we'll give the the duck a face lift(0200),nose job(long cowl&engine mount),beef up her shoulders(wing fittings),and add a self generated spark to her personality(electrical system). If we work hard we should be able to do it in a few days.Hopefully by then I'll have Crispy going and we'll have something to fly when we need a break.Even if Crispy ain't ready by then I'll still have something to fly.
On another note,My friend and co-owner of the Beech 18 and C-170B called me yesterday and told be that I owned half interest in another airplane and all I have to do is finish it and put it together. He's a hell of a pilot but knows nothing about working on anything!!!I'll attach a picture and see how many of you know what it is.I know,do you???

                    Kevin,

Looks like a big pitts. Is that it?

I like your idea about the 0200 and electric start. that would be great. Sounds like a plan, I'll start looking and you also keep an eye out. There are several companies that off the 85 and 0200. Send me a list of what I will need, and I will start collecting them.

I know we can do the 85 without too much hassel, what about the 0200, is that much of a problem?

Sounds like Jonathan is having a great time. Shirley & I are envious. Sounds like agreat trip. Would also love to do it in the Duck.

Couldn't sleep, it is 02:00 . Sometimes this helps

                    Later

You got it Eric.I knew what it was the first time I looked at it but it threw a few people off because of the spring gear.
Lee,The first thing you need to do is buy the Harer STC.It cost $250 and it lets you use the C-85-8,C-85-12,or 0200.It should also give you a detailed list of things you will need.
