  • Tear in Oil Pressure screen Lycoming 62817

I have a Lycoming O-320-E2D with an oil pressure screen part No. 62817.

I have a small hole in the inner fine mesh screen. Is there a way to solder or epoxy repair these screens or is replacement the only option? I'm wondering if a field repair is available, verses putting it back in without repair until a new part arrives.

I had that on a Continental, the screen was brass and I made tiny solder dot on the screen.

Make sure that you produce a good solder joint so it does not come off.

    It's easy.

$125 at Aircraft Spruce, but I found a cheaper set on ebay. The fine mesh inside appears to be sealed with some kind of grey sealer, PPG Pro-Seal? I don't have any brass solder handy so I guess I'll wait. But yeah, with the large cage on the outside and over the small mesh it would be pretty easy to put a dot spanning larger than the hole and should hold well. But the thought of having a piece of solder coming loose downstream of the oil pump is not very comforting. I'm glad I only had some carbon deposits in the screen and no metal to start with. Thanks for the help.

The solder used for brass is most any lead based solder that you get at a hardware store.

Sometimes old exposed solder joints look gray.

Hope it all works out for you, Dave R

Though I might check as to where in California you are located considering I have all kinds of soldering equipment from stuff for work on tiny surface mount electronics to a large crude iron for heavy stuff. I'm in Los Banos in the central valley about an hour from San Jose.

I found 2 screens on fleabay for $18.95, couldn't really pass that up. I'm all the way up near Eureka. But I might stop by Los Banos sometime on the way to/from the folks place in Mariposa. I like to avoid the veil around the Bay in my 1940 and your on the right side of the mountain.

Clean the screen with spray oven cleaner to remove any attached residue. Let it sit for a few minutes then wash with soap. Carbon and combustion byproducts can build up on the fine screen over time and the oven cleaner (normally lye based) will clean it like an oven and promote good oil flow.

Edit: My intent was to provide a clean surface for soldering and unblock any oil restriction. Flux might clean the local tear, but I've used oven cleaner to remove carbon so know it works. Finding lead solder might require looking in our tool boxes. Not much of that available commercially.
