  • Dipstick Question

I have a 1946 BC12D, 95598. A friend just bought a 1946 BC12D. During a converstion he mentioned that his plane held five quarts of oil. We both have the 65 hp Cont. engines. We compared dipsticks. Mine has four marks at 1, 2, 3 and 4 quarts. His dipstick has the same four marks at the same locations, but his dipstick has a 5th mark labeled 4.8 full. The mark is three to four inches above the four quart mark. I am guessing that he has a dipstick from some other engine. Does anyone have any information about this situation?

    Re: Dipstick Question

65 has 4 qts. That sounds like something somebody made up! Watch out for short & long neck, also seaplanes sit level & have another stick ( sometimes).

      Re: Dipstick Question

When I upgraded years ago to a 85 hp continental the dipstick on the oil tank was restamped to hold another quart. As I remember the oil tank was switched from the 65 to the 85. Richard Anderson
