  • New cowl in place!!

    Hi folks!
Took a big step forward today.
After about 2 weeks of all-day work finally got my new top and bottom cowls and new nose bowl installed!
Top and bottom cowls are from David Wenglarz. Excellent work and detail go into them. If you need new ones he is the one to contact! Nose bowl is from Univair.
I have learned more about metal shaping, riveting, trimming, cutting, Dzus fasteners, etc. than I ever dreamed was possible!
I had a school buddy that helped me out. Two heads are better than one and you need at least four hands.
Started out with cardboard patterns then cut and fit new parts and started tweaking from there.
Had to use a metal shrinker from Harbor Freight to get the nose bowl flanges so the top cowl would lay flat on them.
I went with Dzus fasteners instead of the trunk latches and since I am using the shorter spark plugs on top I will not need to have the cowl bumps.
I also pulled the trigger on the Luscombe exhaust STC. I think the upgrade will be great.
I am quite pleased with the results and can now move forward to painting the fuselage.
    All the best!
    Jay

Looks nice. One tip, KS used cardboard as a template. You can go to a heating contractor in your area and buy thin sheet steel. It is not expensive and you can trim everything to fit before cutting the part from aluminum.
