    Re: iPad

I second the Nexus7 and Garmin Pilot, have been using in the Tcraft and RV6 for nearly 2 years, backed up by Avare and AOPA's FlyQ. All are also on Android phone in case Nexus battery runs out. And if the battery supply runs out for all, the paper chart still resides in the flight bag. We are blessed with so many good options.

      Re: iPad

interesting reading the rather interesting concept of flying a 1940 "something" aircraft in "under-the-hood" conditions utilizing an Ipad with GPS and a simulated "Heads-up" digital display! I was introduced to the joys of Ipad viewing a couple of years ago when "Anywhere Map" offered an Ipad program, of which I already had a "lifetime" subscription for one of their small units (ATC). While their tech services have not always been forthcoming, their programs are "user friendly" (no ADS-B or AHRS compatibility, however). On their recommendation, I purchased a "refurbished" Ipad with 32GB capacity, moving to a bigger display, while utilizing a Dual 150 (GPS only). This past year, while at Oshkosh, I purchased a Dual 170 ADS-B receiver and they "threw in" a "FLYQ efb" program, marketed out of Seattle. I'm still getting used to all the features offered by FlyQ, it has far more capability than I normally need and cannot imagine being able to load many other programs on the Ipad with much less than 32GB's. I find the Anywhere Map easier to use and access, but certainly enjoy the added weather features of the FlyQ and "split screen". The Dual 170 is "Bluetooth" enabled, so you can connect to two devices at once if your co-pilot happens to have his "Android" or "mini-Ipad along. I can receive weather only when I'm above 1,500' AGL or above, so checking weather via "Wi-fi" is the "norm" on the ground. And to think, when Taylorcraft was first built, the "Nav Radio Range" was high tech; and most pilots even knew how to use a map, and possibly how to "fold one".

My vote is for the Foreflight App. I have used it for 1 year now and love it with the Stratus II. The app does have a yearly fee but I feel it is well worth it. Great for pre-planning trips.
