    Re: PK 1500's

While we're talking about floats...anyone ever flown PK 1500's??
Any facts, comparisons, observations, things merely "heard" as fact, myths, etc. Has anyone ever seen them on a BC12D??

      Float fitting I.D.

I introduced a neighbor to the New Tcraft forum a few minutes ago and he observed that the float fittings that Grant sent pix of were built by F. Atlee Dodge (in Anchorage). Mr. Dodge is recognized as "Mr. Supercub" by the hardcore Cub drivers. I 'flipped" one of the pictures so the name was readable. I had a problem trying to send the flipped pix. Maybe you can look at Grant's first pix and read it also. Dick

Where can you buy those fittings? I would like to get a set for the shelf just in case the urge strikes me!

Yep, the fittings were purchased from F. Atlee Dodge Aircraft Services in Anchorage, Alaska. They are a beautiful fitting that also include the machined metal blocks that bolt into the fittings that the float struts attach to. I believe they are a modified Cub fitting and they weren't a perfect fit on the Taylorcraft, but not that bad either. Probably much sturdier than most weld-on's and definately much sturdier than the bolt-on. They weren't cheap at $500.00 US for the pair.

I also purchased the front float fittings (machined metal blocks) as per EDO drawings from Kenmore Air Harbor in Kenmore, Washington. These also cost a small fortune. They basically came in a small padded envelope and when my wife saw the declared value on the customs form she almost dropped.

So my bird is now equipped with a float kit. I would like to try the PK 1500's if I could find some and get them properly mounted. Seems to me that would be an excellent float for the Model 19 with 1500# gross. Eddie Peck in Nova Scotia has also built up a hybrid float which are EDO 1400's with a 1320 bottom and says they are very good. Again, my aircraft will be in the new owner maintenance category in Canada so there is a fair bit of flexibility with what I can do. I also know where there are a pair of good EDO 1650's for sale, but I don't like the way the spreader bars attach to the floats on the 1650's. I don't think I have ever seen anything that is less aerodynamic!!

But anyway, I've got a long way to go before I get to the floats. First I've got to get it flying on wheels, and that is still probably a year away with the amount of hockey my son is playing.

I just read my 337 form for float fittings for my BC12-D and it states that they are EDO 1400 bolt on float fittings that are welded to the aircraft 27 inches behind the rear gear fittings. All work was done in accordance with 43.13-1A, Section 2.

              My floats are 1320,s.

                  float plane fin

Luc, you might give a call to Reeve Airmotive in Anchorage, Alaska.
907-272-8522 They had a new, uncovered, primered under-the-fuselage fin for use on a Taylorcraft on floats. That was about a year and a half ago. They may still have it. It's worth a call. Dick

                        Hi Guys,

Let me know when you're having this Alaska fly-in. I'm on skis on Lake Hood. I'm flying an F21 just purchased last summer. It has Aqua 1500 floats, which work OK. They don't get off the water near as fast as the 1320's though. Steve Long.:

Hi Steve! I just replied to an email from Lance and I suggested that February or March would be good times, mostly because of daylight and you can start feeling that sun. Yeah!!!

Give me a shout when you get a chance!

                            where and when

Keep the AK. tribe informed...I would really look forward to meeting everybody somewhere on a lake with a cabin and a warm stove! You might consider the cabin on Vogel Lake, just across Turnagain, about 5 miles toward Kenai from Pt. Possession. Dick Smith N5207M TF#159

Sounds good to me. Who owns the cabin at Vogel Lake? Is that a public use cabin maybe we could rent? I agree Feb. or March, when it's a little warmer would be nice . Though I flew for awhile on Saturday and it was 7 degrees at Lake Hood when I took off and about 24 degrees at 3,000 ft!! Quite an Inversion. Steve. 2005E

                                cabin info

Steve, the Vogel Lake cabin is on a first come/first served basis. I talked to the headquarters office of The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. They said there was no fee and no program in place for reservation. Will have to fly up and check it out as soon as the high winds back down. . I was up there just before freezeup.
There was some firewood on hand. We might each have to fly a bit of wood in or use a plane to tow some wood from across the lake. I've towed a caribou on the ice, in order to get behind a point, where you could avoid wind, so I imagine a dry log would follow too! Dick
