  • Sumping floatplane fuel tank

I recently found some water when sumping my main tank through the gascolator. After about 8 sumps, I was still finding a slight amount of water falling down through the gas. Unsatisfied with results, I looked at the outlet location. I noticed there is a small volume of gas below the outlet when the Tcraft is sitting level. I then re-situated the Tcraft in an attitude more like a landplane. I then got more water out than when in level attitude. A short test flight revealed all water was out with none in the gascolator. My lesson learned is you don't really get the wanted results when in level position so floatplane pilots beware.

I have never seen any water in my F21 on floats but the cabin and wing tanks are covered when not in use. I'll have to take a look at the line routing to make certain that I don't have the same condition. Thanks for the tip.

What year and model? Size of floats?
Were wing tank valves lined up to main tank when you first started sumping?
Was the plane in the water or on a float dolly out of the water?
How much water in total did you drain...best guess estimate?
Thanks for the heads up...just trying to narrow my thought process! Dick

          Dick,
My T-craft is a 1946 BC12D-85 with 1320's. Wing tanks were not open or used recently. The T-craft was level on a crank up dock. I'm guessing I got a total of 20% of the sump sample tube total. It wouldn't have filled the gascolator.
I plan to lower the water end of the ramp before sumping in the future. I'll take 2 or 3 samples to ensure the gas has made it from the tank. I dump samples into my boat tank so there's no waste.
          Be safe!
          Allan

I crank mine up on a lift but it sits in tail low just like if on wheels. No problems. I just took my 90hp TCraft on floats for a ride....it's hard to imagine a better little floatplane. I love my cub but I think the TCraft makes a better floatplane

I agree completely! It's the most fun you can have with your clothes on, especially on floats.
When I rebuilt the C85 with the O200 crank, it was a different airplane. That's what a Tcraft on floats needs.

I checked my F21 and I see no problem. On the ramp it sits level but all of the tanks are covered when stored. Great plane on floats with doors on both sides and almost Super Cub performance. Could always use more speed and range.
