  • Welding in fittings for floats

O.K. you guys on floats. I am welding in float fittings on my BC12D - on its way to becoming a model 19. What I need to know is somewhere behind the rear float fittings and the tail I need to weld in tabs to mount pulleys for the cables to run from the rudder to the water rudders. Does anyone have pictures of these and measurements as to where they should be mounted on the lower longerons?

    Thanks.

Re: Welding in fittings for floats

I have a copy of the EDO drawings for installation of EDO 1400's on a BC-12D. According to the drawing I have, the pulleys on the lower longerons to direct the water rudder cables are located 86" forward of the rear tailpost. I installed the pulley clamps on my lower longerons prior to covering the fuselage. Attached is a picture of the pulley clamps with the pulley attached (to properly set up the spacing between clamps) prior to recover. Of course, the pulleys were removed prior to recover but I cut slits in the fabric for the clamps. These are genuine EDO parts purchased new from Kenmore Air Harbor. Don't ask me how much they cost because I don't want to confirm to everyone that I am crazy!!

I have the same clamp on fittings as grant only takes about 5 min to put them on. Just two small slits in the fabric and slide it in. Ive never seen anyone weld them on before.. I have edo 1320s a frind has the same clamps on his edo 1400s

I have a true F-19 on Aqua floats.

The pulleys attach to the tubing via clamps, there is no welded bracket.

The clamps are vinyl coated clamps such as you would use to attach a electrical cable to a control panel, or down the frame of a truck. They could be described as a "p" shaped when closed up. You open the clamp up, slide it over the fusealage tubing, and the bolted end of the clamp protrudes thru the fabric. The pulley hardware attaches to the bolt that closes up the clamp.

Personally, I don't care much for the setup. I would have preferred a welded bracket because the clamps can slip. It's also hard to keep the fabric opening sealed up to keep water out.

I can send you a photo if you'd like, e-mail me off line [email protected]

Jim, this pix gives you a relative idea of where I attached the fitting your talking about. I have a single water rudder on the right float. Dick
