I have never had a race that did not drop out with enough heat soak except in a Ford truck front wheel. I didn't even try to heat it because it was in such terrible shape. I just took it over to the arc welder and welded a line around the inside of the race. The race just fell out. You can often just weld short little lines around the inside and that will be enough. I wouldn't be afraid to do this on your shinn wheel half but I would be hesitant to do on mine. I'm not that good of a welder.

Get a junk wheel, stuff an old race in it and try it.

Rons method works great. I use this method for bearing races and valve seats.

I have done some home made machining with the drill press. You can do this with either, sockets or brass. What you do is find a socket that is just a bit to large (if you can't find a perfect fit) and you braze a short extension into it that has the socket wrench end cut off, then place it in a drill press and adjust the press so the bottom of the socket is held right at the height of the drilling deck and hold a file against it at low speed. You try to make the work as small as possible, now if you have a machining outfit available you have it makes it easy to make a drift to get it out but in any case you only need to make it 1 file thick because you will be able to get to it after it moves that 1/8 inch, just big enough to catch the ring and small enough to get in there

care and good judgment should be used so as not to get the race to hot by running an excessive bead, as the heat will cause the race to expand faster than the wheel half and then the wheel will crack big time and ruin your day also!
this a lesson a learned the hard way.

I bought a set of heel bars about 10 years ago. You will get this bearing race out without heat or damage to your wheel.
