  • Who does everyone use for insurance.

    Well.....

It's time. I'm pulling the trigger in the next few weeks (schedules dependent) on a BC12D-85.

Cash in the bank, just waiting for schedules to align so I can out to to Virginia and pick up the bird.

I've got to arrange insurance - I just realized I've never posed the question to the tribe here as to who uses whom?

I'm a low-time pilot, so I know I'll be paying more, but as soon as I hit 100 hours, I should drop by about 50% (assuming no claims).

So....who uses what insurance? Shopping for rates?

Not sure who told you about your insurance dropping 50% at 100 hours. I think they were pulling your leg. I originally had Avemco, great folks and great personalized service, but you pay for it.

I went through AOPA and use Global Aerospace, less personal but cheaper and it gets the job done. Best of luck on your purchase!
    Cheers,

I have used AOPA and now I am with EAA who uses Falcon Insurance. My premium is $710.00 with $26,000 hull and 1 million liability. I do have 1000 hours in the Tcraft with never a claim. I probably could go cheaper some where else, but they have been great. They let me make a few payments which helps.

We use Avemco. I've shopped around and actually found a lower premium but their "open pilot" criteria was ridiculous.
We only insure for liability and property damage and the annual premiums are under $400 per year. ($9 less than the C-172)
This is a corporate policy and the named pilots are all high time with lots of tailwheel time. The open pilot states private license and current medical and bfr with tailwheel endorsement. the other policy wanted 500 hours in type.

            All:

Im currently with Packer & Associates / Richard Packer [740-494-2554] ...they now Taylorcraft. The carrier is QBE.
I followed Eric Minnis suggestion and contacted Joe Nicks [336-260-3845] and he just quoted me yesterday $ 200 less than Packer. I have requested a copy of the quoted Policy in order to make a comparison of coverages and exeptions. Stated value of $ 25,000, 1Mill/100 is what I carry with full hull in-motion/not-in-motion with NIL deductible, including off airport landing (with towing to shop), No FAR exclusions. Less than $ 850 currently.

Waiting on Falcon Ins. to send me their quote and policy.

Will advice here the results of the policies comparison.

Sean: let me know when you are comming to Virginia. If you need help, hangar space, etc... we are here.

Re: Who does everyone use for insurance.

Just got a quote through Falcon from Chartis - Price was about what I expected - $1500/year with my AOPA "discount.".....I guess I shouldn't put that in quotes - AOPA membership saved me $90 - so my membership paid for itself for the year.

My only concern is the "Open Pilot Warranty" - it says "Any PRIVATE PILOT with 500 hours PIC With 100 or more in tailwheel....." (emphasis mine). I asked if it could be changed to say "SPORT PILOT" and was told NO.

I'll call Packer on Monday. I was originally NOT going to do a lot of price shopping, but I think it might help a bit.

                Keep the recommendations coming!!!

                    Sean,

I suspect the reason your quote was so high is due to your low total time. As a suggestion you may want to consider getting only liability and not in motion coverage. This would reduce the insurance company's risk (from their viewpoint) of your low total time. Of course, YOU would be assuming the risk if you ground loop or cause damage to your plane while in motion. But without the in motion coverage, you would be eliminating about a grand from your insurance expense for the year. Just make sure you make it a point to accumulate a hundred hours in your plane that first year. Then next years premiums should be a lot lower. When you are getting a quote don't just ask for the total annual premium. Ask the agent to break it down by category, ie; in motion, liability..... Then you can pick and choose which coverage you want. Ask a lot of questions. A good thing to know when shopping for hull coverage, which I am suggesting you may want to do without, is to find out where the break is on hull value that makes the premium higher. As an example, you may be charged the same hull premium for any hull value between 15K & 20K. If your premium is the same for a 15K airplane as a 20K, tell them your plane is worth 20K. But vice-versa, don't claim a 21K value if it is going to cost you another $500 in premium. These numbers are only to make a point, not to indicate what a specific hull value premium should be. Ask if there is a coverage range for the same premium on each segment of the quote such as liability and not in motion. I would also suggest that for the first year or two you not worry about the open pilot requirements. Just don't let anyone else fly your plane unless they show you THEIR policy which states the value of aircraft they are covered in. Also when getting quotes ask them how many hours you need in the Taylorcraft before your in motion rates go down. AS I recall it was 100 hours for me, but that was many years ago.

Re: Who does everyone use for insurance.

I have used Avemco for 40 plus years. VERY easy to deal with and of course there is no middle man. They will allow you to skip two- three months if, say, you don't want to fly in the coldest months due to bad weather.this lowers the premium considerably. You can just have hull for those months. You can pay them in 4 installments which is great for cash flow. I only had one claim, when the hangar collapsed on my trophy bc12d. They paid the full 26 grand in 10 days. You will pay more with low time. I paid 1200. 00 per year for full hull, liability etc. it was worth it! Have them explain to you what some agents don't tell you ie: that some policy's don't cover you flying in to an uncontrolled field for a fly in, airshow, etc. be SURE you ask each company what they do and do NOT cover! Often times this is where "cheaper "gets expensive. I could also have two additional named pilots provided they had 200 hrs. Tw time. Or if they were working on the airplane as a certified mechanic and test flew it. The fellow I deal with at Avemco is brian. Let me add here that both airports I've been based at in the last 20 years required a copy of my insurance which was no problem for me. BEST, JC.

Re: Who does everyone use for insurance.

I agree with Jim, Avemco is great, but you pay for that convenience. I sometimes miss that. I dealt with Stephanie at Avemco, great gal. I was a zero time tailwheel pilot with a new-to-me BC-12 and I had not been logging hours since the mid 1970's. I think mine was about $1,200/yr for full coverage. Though my premiums are now cheaper, I could not get them to come down on their price to even try and get close to matching. I think they give you 10% off for additional flight training as well as for programs like the WINGS program.

Unless you have money falling out of your pockets, get hull insurance. You could be staring at your plane, wrecked, and not get a penny for it but still owe money on it. I would do that as a low-time pilot. I would rather pay a little more and have the piece of mind the insurance company owns it and not me if something happens. It doesn't take much to total a fabric covered airplane.
                        Cheers,
                        Marty

Marty is right! A buddy who is a good builder and an AI looked at my airplane and said he could not have built it, the way it had been done for less than 30 grand. It was a beauty! You cannot afford not to have good insurance in today's lawyered up world. JC

Think twice about dropping hull during low usage times.

                            I would not do it.

I have had two claims for a total loss and both happened while the airplane was tied down and destroyed in a windstorm.

                            First time was without hull.

                            Second time was with hull.

Ditto on PIM. Been with them since about 1990 when Richard Berlow went out of business.

I have had one claim with them.

But I think that I pay ~$100 more and have higher hull
