  • Cactus Fly in trip report

I just spent a wonderful day walking around the Cactus Fly in in Casa Grande Arizona

I found three Taylorcrafts on the flight line. Sincere apologies if I missed a fourth.

NC43338 was a beautiful BC12D in Red and Cream. The nose grills were silver and the wheel pants had metal strip attached like the deluxe wheel pants. Funny thing given the fine overall condition of the plane, but I kept going back to the wire for the fuel gauge cork float that was beautifully rebuilt; straight and clean. Funny how you notice little things.

NC95070 was another fine BC12D. It had a pilot-side slide window and Kidney control yokes. The colour was a blue strip with diamond on a white fuselage (similar to mine!) with the blue leading edge scalloped back into the white of the wing. The interior was lovely, as was the interior on the previous plane. I had a nice talk with the owner as he fuelled discussing details of his plane and mine. These conversations and contacts with other Tcraft owners make one of the best parts of a get-together like this.

N46268 was an L2M in all its military splendour. Everything that one would expect of a war bird was there in this plane. It is always interesting to me to see where the L2s and the BC12Ds differed. I spent a long time looking at detail and admiring.

Each year the Cactus fly in is one of my favourite days. This one was no different and the three fine Taylorcrafts on the line added greatly to my enjoyment. If any of the owners are reading this, congratulations on truly wonderful air planes and thanks for helping make one of my favourite fly ins just a little more special. Can't a\wait 'til next year!

    Skip,

You didn't happen to take any pictures, did you? Your descriptions of the three Taylorcraft was like someone describing a gourmet meal to a hungry man. The first description made me curious to see what it looked like.

Also, I was thinking it was a little early in the year to be having a fly-in, but I guess in Casa Grande it was a perfect time. What was the weather like?

Sorry (Hangs head in shame...) I wasn't carrying the camera around. I'll try to do better next time.

Coming from the mountains of New Mexico, The Cactus flyin is always the first sunburn of the year and Copperstate (http://www.copperstate.org/csj)
is the last sunburn of the year.
The weather was perfect. Good flying weather from both east and west, blue sky, light winds, and about 80 degrees on the flight-line.

43338 is the airplane I sold to dave allen who bases it at stellar airpark. It was rebuilt by al Zoltisch of near buffalo ny. He did a masterful job. The fellow who flew it from Baltimore to chandler ariz. said it flew perfectly and when he stopped for gas everyone remarked how nice it was. If it had had a starter and an 85hp I would have kept it! Beautiful rebuild. JC
