Re: 2013 Central Texas Taylorcraft Fly-In

To add spice and fun, Terry asked me to help plan a couple events for Central Texas Fly In. So here are the tentative rules for a Bomb Drop Contest and a Spot Landing Contest. These rules are unabashedly stolen from the Cessna 120/140 club.

The rules are set in firm jello. Quibbling, kibitzing and ideas to improve the contests are acceptable until such time as the rules are declared set in concrete.

            Bomb Drop
Objective - Drop a flour bomb closest to a predetermined target.
            Procedure -
            1. Up to two person crew is allowed.
            2. Minimum drop altitude is 400 feet which will be verified by the drop zone judge.
            3. A safe airspeed shall be maintained at all times.
            4. Award will be given for bomb that hits closest to the target.
Bombs will be available @ 2 for $5. Proceeds will pay for award and surplus $$, if any, will help Terry defray fly in costs.

            Spot Landing

Objective - Perform a power-off precision approach and three point landing with both main wheels contacting the runway closest to a line without contacting prior to the line.
            Procedure-
            1. Power shall be reduced to idle at a point 800 feet AGL abeam the touchdown point.
            2. Flaps and forward slips and side slips may be used during the approach.
            3. The engine shall remain at idle throughout the approach except to clear the engine (2-3 seconds). No engine clearing below 200 feet.
            4. Judges will mark the point at which the all three wheels are on the ground and do not leave the runway (i.e., do not bounce). The mark will be where the main wheels touched.
            5. The main wheels cannot contact the runway prior to the target line. The tail wheel can contact prior to the line. Main wheels contacting prior to the line receive no score.
            6. The shortest distance past the line is the winner. Headwind or crosswind shall not affect the rules. The distance is marked when all three wheels are down.
Entry fee is $2.50 per attempt which shall be used to cover an award and defray fly in costs.

I have no idea what the award shall be at this time. Suffice it to say it will not be a free kitten nor the Hope Diamond, but most likely somewhere within those boundaries.
            Best Regards,
            Mark Julicher

There is an interesting image, Taylorcraft, pilot, lift off, and a cat doing 900mph around the cabin on take off!

Re: 2013 Central Texas Taylorcraft Fly-In

                  To all tribesmen and aficionados near and far;
Here is more information on the The Central Texas Fly In, duly coordinated with Terry Bowden and Sue at Ft Parker.

As of 5 April, rooms are still available by calling the Fort. Tent camping is also encouraged.

Friday we will be on our own for meals. Terry is driving his Suburban and there are several others driving to Groesbeck, so we shall plan to get sandwich groceries and drinks in town, and diners can throw a couple bucks in the hat to cover it.

Saturday, Three meals will be available at the Fort. The staff there will make up home-style casseroles and such that they can freeze and have on hand. Once head count is known, the staff will do final fixings.
If, due to good weather and a large crowd, we should happen to overwhelm this plan, we can still send a posse to town for emergency supplies.

Sunday, Continental breakfast will be available. This will be accomplished by sending a car to town for the fixings.

Looking at the latest ForeFlight information, fuel prices are all over the map in East Texas, so pick your fuel stops accordingly. Ft Parker Flying Field has no services. The grass should be in good condition due to the recent rains. We will still have to call ahead and check on recent mowing and any issues with mud. First guy in needs to pass along field conditions to later arrivals. (NOTE: If the field is really in bad shape, look for an inverted Taylorcraft near the touchdown zone.)

Bomb drop and Spot landing contests will be Saturday about Mid-Day. Awards for 1st thru 3rd place have been donated by Texas Precision Engraving

Re: 2013 Central Texas Taylorcraft Fly-In

The fly-in is almost here. I hope you are all making plans to come. Cross your fingers that the weather will hold out as this forecast shows for next weekend.
                    Fri-Sat-Sunday April 12-13-14.

I've had several folks say that they plan to make it if the weather is good. I have had many folks say they are driving in regardless of the weather conditions. Either way, I am looking forward to visiting with fellow Taylorcrafters and getting to know everyone better.

I must apologize to the group that my participation and planning this year has not been at the level I had wanted to provide. Family and work activities for me have been on overload so far in 2013. All in a good way. But this has left me little time to spend on my Taylorcraft hobby. Unfortunately, N95598 is out of annual and so I will be driving this time. And regrettably I will be attending without my wife and kids. Having 4 High School-age kids makes for busy times. Everybody's schedules are in conflict this time. One daughter is going to San Antonio on a school trip for the HS Dance team. Other 2 daughters, son, and wife are headed to Dallas on the HS Band Trip. Their presence will be missed as they did a lot last year to run the registration tent and helped provide information and run logistical errands. We hope to have some other folks who will volunteer to help with some of these things.

There are several people you need to seek out when you arrive to let them know we all appreciate their efforts to make the fly-in happen.

We all owe a debt of thanks to MARK JULICHER for stepping up to help with planning and coordinating things. He has certainly picked up my slack and has done better with it than I would have done anyways. I am looking forward to the contest events he has planned. Since I won't have my airplane there to show everyone how its done, I hope to participate as a judge at least. You all know mark from his posts here on the forum. Just look for him near his cream and maroon BC12D. There's likely to be a group of folks gathered around him learning from his wealth of Taylorcraft experience and knowledge... or listening to one of his yarns. One way or another he's likely to be the one talking.

SARAH MCREYNOLDS, the manager of the Old Fort Parker Historic Site, has us covered for Saturday with Breakfast, Lunch, and Supper. No doubt, it was her excellent coordination that made last year go so smoothly. She will be easy to find... just look for a high spirited red-headed lady at the center of operations and she is the one running things. She has devoted her life's passion to keeping the history alive at the Old Fort Parker Historic Site. Be sure and ask her to tell the story and to give you a tour of the Fort. She absolutely loves telling the story.

And reports from DARIUS FARMER, the grounds manager at the flying field, indicate that the field conditions are near perfect. Darius has faithfully continued manual watering and fertilizing of the runway through two years of drought conditions. And so far this year, our good Lord has provided a little rain over the past couple of weeks. There's probably not another airfield in Texas that is more meticulously maintained than Fort Parker Flying Field. In case you haven't noticed, the grasses and vegetation that are native to the area are typically a variety of sparse coverage of brownish green shades this time of year. Take note of how lush and fully green the fertile field is and you'll realize the work that has gone on. DARIUS is probably the first person you'll see when you arrive as he is the guy with the big straw hat driving the "Fowller Me" cart and waving the green and red flags for parking planes.

DARIUS and field owner, JED KECK, have graciously offered up the field for this Taylorcraft fly-in at no cost. And SARAH puts in a lot of her time effort to make things go right. This is only one of several fly-ins they sponsor every year. We all know that this kind of hospitality is a natural trait of generous Texans. But we also know it takes a lot of work and costs a lot to put on a fly-in. People tend to overlook the little things like the strategically placed port-a-potty's, tables, chairs, signs, flags, and other facilities. So please come prepared to make a sizeable donation to help them defray their costs and to give them encouragement to continue making Fort Parker Flying Field a special retreat for old airplanes to gather.

I'm looking forward to a big turnout and a fun time.

I'm wrapping up a few things at work and hoping to head that way this afternoon. I'll be in my Cessna 140 and there are quite a few more of these birds coming. Don't let us out-number you at your own fly-in!

Be sure to smile and wave at the big bald guy with the camera. That'll be me trying to make you famous! There were some beautiful planes there last time and they're right at home on the grass runway!
