When the rain and clouds began to subside, on Friday last, I had everthing ready for a Saturday departure South.
Left KLS at 1000hrs; fuled in SPB and then to UOA for a new GARMIN 296. Set direct to RDM.
Asked for a good place to fly in and camp. The FBO suggested 5S2, "Cresent Lake". After some discussion on the terrain and density of the day, off I went.
5S2 is right between two of the lakes and at the bottom of two mountians,just one block from the strip is town. Elevations is 4,810'. After setting up camp, on to the only pub in town. Great people and good food and beer.
With the elevation being a wee bit high, an early morning take off would be high priority. So upon waking and breaking down camp and packing up before sunrise, waiting for the morning mist and fog to burn off, which did not happen untill around 0900 and temps are beginning to rise rapidly!

With 3,900' and trees at the end. Full power and roll, tail slowly rise, hold it, let speed build, come on 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65 and now hold the power curve to clear trees. I can see that there is noway that I'm gonna clear them. There is about 100' cut out in the trees that lead out to the north lake, so between them I went. That was a real heart pumper (NDE take off).
Hanging around over the lake untill alitude was in my favor to clear the tops and head LMT. Fuel and again asked for another place to fly in and camp. "Trinity Center" 086, thats a nice place to camp someone said; As the temps kept climbing, I was glad to be in warm weather.
086 ele. is 2,390' so a mid afternoon landing with 3,200' is ok.
This place is so beautiful that while flying in one eye is caught by all. On final and your just a bit high, better slip her on in, there we are, now set dowwwwooooo!!?? Nose is hard to the right, no rudder control! Brakes, hard left. Houses direct ahead, aileron, brakes, aileron, brakes, right wing high, left too low, brakes and all the way around with no touch. Shaking and trying to figure what happened, taxied back and then down the runway using brakes, and there it was; a brake spring. Parked and found that "BOTH" tail wheel springs had came off on touch down.
Well after the blood settled, I thanked the LORD for savin my butt in a 360* ground loop on the runway and pulled out goin straight down the line with out a touch.
The rest of the trrip was to E36- Georgetown,CA. and then down to Columbia for three days. Great time.
Met MR. Bob O'hara at E36. Thanks for the rides to and from town.
Left E36 for RDD. for LMT for SLE. for KLS.
Cut short due to presence required back home.
