  • Repainted L-2b

After six months,I have finally finished repainting my L-2B. This was my first attempt at a fabric airplane. A lot harder than I anticipated. I am pleased with the result.

I fly with a friend who has a L2-M painted in military colors. We always got lots of attention when we flew in together. I expect we will get more now. We are located in Texas (Grand Prairie and Corsicanna). If you are near drop a line and we will meet up.

          Tom;
I'd love to meet up with you. Given the distance (Denver to Corsicana) , our 14 gallon tanks, and the lack of L2 speed it'll have to wait a couple of years for me to fully retire and have time to burn. I wish happy times in your new baby.

Tom, nice work. To add to the authenticity your radio call letters on the tail should be 236018 (6 inch) and the lettering on the boot cowl should bo on the left side only. Also your ship was ordered as an O-57A and was redesignated as a L-2A not L-2B. Dick

              Dick:

Where did you get your information on my plane. I have been trying to find a data base I could tap into. Since I did not have specific data I used other L2 as a reference.

My plane is registered as a DCO-65 with gross weight of 1300 lbs. This would make it an L2-B since the L2-A has a 1200 lb gross.

                Re: Repainted L-2b

Tom, I have been collecting data for close to thirty years. Your ship is a DCO-65 with a 1300 pound gross. All L-2s with a serial number from 4200 to 5165 had agross of 1300 pounds, Tandems with a serial number between 4000 and 4199 had gross weights if 1250,Only the gliders had agross weight of 1200 pounds, The L-2M sn 5166-5199 and 6253-6318 had a gross of 1325.Your serial number told me that your ship was ordered as an O-57A. L-2B s started at 4576. Dick

                  Tom,

Follow the lonk to the FAA website and you can view the TCDS for the DCO-65.

                  http://rgl.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guidance_Library/rgMakeModel.nsf/0/78675250e14ce0af86256d36006571f2/$FILE/a-746.pdf

There you will see the DCO-65, L-2A and L-2B were all 1300 pound gross weight. The L-2M is 1325. There are other variations and you can read about them.

                    Re: Repainted L-2b

I have attached a file that gives the relationshio betweeen aircraft and Army serial numbers.

I will leave it to Dick to explain how he came up with yours as I do not know your Taylorcraft serial number.

I suggest you buy the L-2 Blueprints, if you do not want to buy the blueprints you can view them on the taylorcraft.org website.

The 4 CD set is available for $25.00 where $20.00 will go to the Taylorcraft Foundation and $5.00 will be used to cover shipping and material costs.

A new section has been added to the L-2 CD's thanks to Claude Underwood, it includes a compilation by Claude Underwood of L-2 history, all L-2 Army Technical Manuals including, Erection and Maintenance Manual, Airplane Parts Catalog, Pilots Flight Operating Instructions, and Structural Repair Instructions, also has WWII history, AAC Technical Orders and more. I would like to thank Claude for providing all this information. This is only available on the CD set and not online.

Hey thanks fo rall the replies. I have learned a lot in the last few hours. Now is there a data base of history on idividual planes? It would be nice to find the history of this plane.

                        Tom,

Go to the National Air and Space Archives Division link below and you can request the Army Air Corps History card for your aircraft.

Go to FAA.GOV to Request Copies of Aircraft Records at this link

The Aircraft Registration Branch maintains registration records on individual aircraft and serves as a repository for airworthiness documents received from FAA field offices. This will give you all the 337's and all the registration info since it left the AAC.

I have a question, do the repairs shown in the military manual apply to the the civilian versions? In Oshkosh, at a forum on Cub rib repair they used the L-4 manual as the final say on technique. Should I use this CD set as a resource to rebuild my BC-12 made in Feb. of 41?

                            Larry,

I do believe the Army manuals are acceptable data, however, they only cover the D series (DCO-65) Tandem models not the B series Taylorcrafts.

I believe the L-2 maintanence mznual is the same as the old CAM 18. It follows very closely to 43.13. Most of the tandems were built very close to the "B" series except that they had wood ribs with wood spars and metal ribs with metal spars. Dick
