  • Coming out of hibernation

It's been -30F+- at night for some time but sunny days with 12 hrs of daylight now. Time to dig out the Taylorcraft and install skis.

Snow's about 3' deep and to the top of my EDO 1320 floats left of plane. This is at Fairbanks Intl Float pond looking south.

    Re: Coming out of hibernation

Glad to hear you guys had lots of snow , because we here in Iowa had virtually none except for about 4 inches last Saturday for the whole season, snowed once before in Dec a couple of inches very unusual for Iowa . Glad to know its not global warming.

      Re: Coming out of hibernation

Some years are like this with cold interrupted by snow. The ocean temps to the south of Alaska were cooler this winter so we got caught up from last winter's warmth and no snow. next year may be warmer and dryer. It was -25F last night but it's warmed to +10 now under clear skies and no wind. Soon it'll all melt and we'll have a bumper crop of mosquitoes but hopefully fewer forest fires this summer.

You folks have nice weather but too many people for us hermits. Still I'd like to be able to ride my motorcycle now!

        Hi Gary,
Thanks for posting your photos. I'm sure you don't remember but about 2 years ago I talked with you on one warm sunny evening there in front of your sweet looking plane. Sure brings back awesome memories of being up in Alaska. So thanks again for sharing your photos , and some photos on skis for us less fortunate snowless people would be wonderful also.

Hi Ernie and yes I recall our conversation at the float pond. I've since had a friend make me a Geezer Bench out of home milled wood (It's in the first pic). Next time your up this way we can watch the plane on floats, feed the ducks, and curse the world's youth.

Cloudy today and finally a little warmer. March in Fairbanks, AK. so far: https://twitter.com/AlaskaWx

            Re: Coming out of hibernation

Gary thanks for the photos on skis . Like Iowa, central Minnesota didn't have much snow this year either this is the first time in over 6 years that I never bothered to put skis on the plane.
I'm very much looking forward to venturing back up to Alaska. Last time I camped in the transient area I was on wheels with the maule this time I hope to be using the taylorcraft on floats. I'm hoping to get it back in the air and on floats for a journey up in 2018.
So keep the Geezer bench in good repair until then and happy safe flying.

Good deal Ernie on your planned 2018 journey. Let me know when you plan to be here and we can go camping and fishing at the cabin in the ski pics. That's assuming all's still well by then. Every day's a new one for me.

I grew up in the UP and NE Wisconsin so do recall winter from the Midwest. Not sure what's worse...our dark winter days or your climate.

Get the Taylorcraft float flying and post some pics and I'll do the same this summer.
