Re: West Coast Taylorcraft Rendezvous May 12-14
Last year the trip took a little over 30 minutes in the Rocket... Looking at 1.5 in my '40.
Ok, I think I'm in, at least for breakfast in Woodlake.Michael Robinson

Re: West Coast Taylorcraft Rendezvous May 12-14
Well it is now less then a week away to our annual get together. If you can't come for the whole weekend, then come for part of a day just to meet everyone and make contacts. Fly-in or drive in what ever works for you. Ken has been out of town for the last few weeks so if you have questions and can't reach him you can call me. Hope to see you there.

Re: West Coast Taylorcraft Rendezvous May 12-14
Planning on bringing NC26528 to Woodlake for breakfast on Saturday if the weather holds. There have been some pretty horrific winds here lately, so fingers crossed. Battled a 60 knot headwind coming home from PHX last week in the RV-8!Michael Robinson

Re: West Coast Taylorcraft Rendezvous May 12-14
I hope you have good weather and a great turnout Jerry, wish I could attend. Thanks, also for making the trip down to KRAL in April to meet us and visit the great museums. We all made it home safely as the rains moved in and stayed for days after.Mike

Re: West Coast Taylorcraft Rendezvous May 12-14
Well, looking at the weather (and out the window), the wind is going to preclude any Taylorcraft flying from my strip today. Its blowing about 30 knots and isnt going to improve much. Maybe Sunday will work out, but I'm not holding my breath.
Hope you guys have a safe trip and hope to see you next time.Michael Robinson

Re: West Coast Taylorcraft Rendezvous May 12-14
Ken
I tried to make it. Took off from Riverside KRAL at about 10:50am. Flew north to the San Gabriels turned west and started climbing until Mount Wilson and at 8,000 feet turned NNW to head for Tehachapi pass. At Mt Wilson contracted George Wacker who was flying his T to the Rendezvous out of Cable KCC8 following the Cajon Pass route to Tehachapi. I could see that Tehachapi was socked in, ForeFlight indicated it had 200 foot ceiling. ForeFlight was also indicating clear skies at Poterville KPTV. The plan was to fly on top to KPTV and then let down to get below the 5,000 ceiling, I was about 20 minuets ahead of George so I told him I would give a weather report when I got to KPTV. Unfortunately when I got within range of KPTV's AWOS it was saying ceiling undetermined and missing even though ForeFlight was still indicating clear skies. Pic 3 below shows camping gear ready to load. Pic 1,2,4,5 show approaching entering the pass, last pic is view over KPTV. Absolutely no holes in sight. Radioed George, who was just entering the pass that I was turning around. While ForeFlight was indicating clear skies at Modesto KMOD, if they weren't I would not have enough fuel left to get back to the high desert. So I took the safer option of turning back. So did George. He had enough fuel to return home. I had to land at General Fox KWJF for fuel. Wind was 24+ a couple of degrees off of the run way. Landed and managed to stay headed into the wind until getting to the fuel pump. Chocked the plane, fueled up but the wind was still blowing pretty hard. I was afraid that once I started it and then took off the chocks it would blow backwards below I could get into the plane. Got a couple of linemen to hold the struts while started the T and was able to get back in with them holding the struts. Taxied to the end of the runway got clearance to take off but had extreme difficulty in taxing across the wind to the runway. Weather vanned twice into the wind requiring 360 turns before finally lining up on the runway. Takeoff was quick and set up a long, hot, bumpy ride back to the Cajon pass and on to KRAL. This is the first Rendezvous I have not made since 1992 but you can't say I didn't try.
Weekend was not a complete bust for flying. Saturday was EAA Chapter 1 Young Eagle rally at Flabob KRIR. So I flew the RV6 over and gave 6 rides, giving me a total of 20 for the year. Within striking distance of 25 for the YE 25th anniversary. Hope to see you guys next year. I need to figure out an alternative route north for when the valley is completely over cast.

Re: West Coast Taylorcraft Rendezvous May 12-14
Wow Jim, that's quite an effort! From the looks of picture #2, you flew directly over my strip about 2 minutes before you snapped the picture. Based on the wind banging my hangar door, there was no way I was flying the Tcraft that day.
So how many made it for the weekend, anyway?Michael Robinson

Re: West Coast Taylorcraft Rendezvous May 12-14
No, I'm not at MHV... Im a bit SW from there at 1CL2. Looks like you just passed over The Silver Queen mine (which is the little mountain just to my north) when you snapped the pic.
I've been flying around there for 20 years now and some of the roughest air I've ever encountered is the rotor coming off that ridgeline right off your nose. Generally its extremely localized but if you get the altitude and distance wrong it is a hell of a ride. Fortunately my Taylorcraft has not seen it yet, and I hope it stays that way.Last edited by NC26528; 05-21-2017, 09:05.Michael Robinson
