  • " I used to own your Taylorcraft...!

Tribe...Back home in Alaska...! Was standing in the shop and heard the trumpeting sound of a couple of swans out on the lake...they are back too. Saw the first loon yesterday. While I was watching the swans, I heard the calling of a couple of ravens...a few seconds later they chased a bald eagle away, passing not over 75 feet overhead. Hand propped the Taylorcraft yesterday...started on the first pull...It's good to be home...!

Had a call on the answering machine when we got home. Was an inquiry from a gentleman in Caldwell, ID. nearly 84 years of age, who wondered if I owned Taylorcraft N5207M, saying he had sold her in about 1970. Told him I had owned her since about 1974 and that she was was still flying. I pulled out the log books and gave him the info he needed to aid his memory. I will send him some pictures of the plane in various places where she has taken me. What a pleasure to connect with someone from the "Ol' Girl's" past. These old aircraft have certainly touched a few lives down through the years. I've been blessed to be a part of "07 Mike"'s story. Dick

Re: " I used to own your Taylorcraft...!

Nice story. I once owned a plane that won my heart the moment I saw it. It was a 1967 Piper Comanche 260B. Shortly after becoming its new owner I searched everywhere I could to find any prior owners. The only one I found had passed away but his widow lived in New Hampshire. I made contact with her and she sent me copies of pages of the gentleman's log book that showed what a good time the couple had with "Baby". Many trips to Bermuda and around the continental U.S.

I searched the internet and found the gentleman's obituary. I printed out a copy of it. I put it in a plain white envelope, no address. I put it in the headliner of N29780. I thought he must be in heaven, and putting his obit in the sky seemed like the right thing to do. Unless the new owner (Skip) has changed the headliner, that obituary is still in there.

I hate to admit it. I was in a bar in Las Vegas when I wrote that last message (am on my way to the fly-in in Texas). I just re-read the previous message and noticed that I said the 260B was N29780. Turns out, that's the registration number of my T-craft. The Comanche was N9170P. Damn, those gin and tonics were strong!

I think getting the owner history of an airplane is great when you order the CD from the FAA. That, along with the early logbooks that list each flight of the plane really give me a good history of my plane. I just wish I could figure out the abbreviations/identifiers used for the airports. Still, makes for some great reading.

If memory serves...I am the 37th owner of 20407. There have to be some stories with all those people touching it's past. Roscoe Turner bought it new in Nov of 1938. My logs only go back to 1941.

While Turner owned it, do you know any locations where it was kept? Did he still own it in 1941? Any pilot names in the early logbooks?
